Paid consulting position on Universe Sandbox
« on: January 18, 2012, 05:30:24 PM »
We've hired someone for this position. 2012-02-23

... but if you have something amazing to contribute, feel free to reach out anyway.

We're looking for someone with a strong background in physics and astronomy (like an Astronomy graduate student) who's interested in doing some part-time paid consulting (and maybe coding) on the next major version of the gravity simulator Universe Sandbox.

The current plan is to release a major update, including a Mac version, sometime later this year.  We've already got two awesome developers coding away on the next version, but both of them come from a video game background (as do I) and so we're looking for someone to help implement more awesome astronomy content.

Our continuing goal is to make the easiest and most captivating way to learn about the universe through real-time interaction, creation, and destruction... while keeping the simulation representative and true to our best understanding of reality.

What we need help with (for example)...
  • We're currently working on visual effects for stars. What do stars look like up close and how should these effects scale from small brown dwarfs up to super-giants?
  • Assist us in improving the quality of galaxy simulation and collisions with the implementation of dark matter and other currently missing factors.
  • Help us navigate the complexities of improving collisions between all scales of objects from a small asteroid into a gas giant to a sun like star into a super-massive black hole.
  • Setting up realistic parameters and simulations for things like the Kuiper belt.
  • Advise us in making the new version an ever better tool for use in education.
  • Figuring out what's the best way to simulate stellar evolution.
  • And point out when we're doing something the wrong way and what stuff we're missing...

It would be great to find someone who was also interested in writing some code too (primarily astronomy related functions)... We're using C#.

If you're interested, send us an email:
jobs at universesandbox.com

Include your CV and answer these questions:

  • What are your qualifications?
  • Why are you interested in working on this project?
  • What feature would you be most interested in adding or helping make better?

We want to take our time and find someone who's excited about helping make great software that will undoubtedly reach a huge number of people (and who won't mind being paid for their efforts).

Le no CV.

1) Um, I'm not 18 and don't know how to code.
2) Money, money, money. Sounds fun!
3) The fact that when you click on density and look at the presets, it shows earths to be 5.52...

Wow, Congradulations on your growing company :)

Well, you do have a whole community of people who like astronomy and are interested in it who can help you out here.

As for me, I am over 18 but know nothing about C# coding and don't have a strong background in physics or astronomy.

stellar evolution.
Super Massive
hyper mass stars: these are the last sages of the High mass lifespan and can grow up to 10-40 AU.
red hyper giant  100,000 yrs
blue hyper giant 70,000 yrs
yellow hyper giant 120,000 yrs

High mass stars: these stars have very short lifespan but are the most dangerous types out there.
O class stars 1,000,000< mill yrs

B class stars 1,000,000-5,000,000 mill yrs

A class stars  10,000,000-15,000,000 mill yrs

Med mass stars: a normal star lifespan.
F class stars 1,000,000,000-1,500,000,000 bill yrs

G class stars 10,000,000,000-13,000,000,000 bill yrs

Low mass stars: can live for a long time but not as long as the brown Dwarfs.
K class stars 15,000,000,000-25,000,000,000 bill yrs

M class stars 100,000,000,000-1,000,000,000,000

Brown Dwarf : can last to the end of the universe or at it's star era

L class stars 1,000,000,000,000-???

T class stars 1,000,000,000,000-???

Y class stars 1,000,000,000,000-???

Black hole:possibly star at the begging of the universe and can last through the star era and can last up to the degenerate era

X class: ???-???
