If a world like ours, which depended on the tides to keep nutrients cycling and keep the deeper levels of the ocean from stagnating, had a moon which--in a very eccentric orbit--passed close by the planet every 12 years, would that still be enough of a slosh to keep things moving (albeit with slightly different sea life) or would the sea have turned over by then, do you think?
