I been pondering on this question...
« on: December 13, 2009, 09:39:05 AM »
If someone was to take a helicopter and hover at Max Altitude it can hover at for 24 Hours (with Infinite amount of fuel), would the Earth rotate beneath it?

Will the people in the Helicopter notice the Earth rotating beneath it?

I don't think Earth would start to rotate, because the helicopter has its back rotor to nullify its rotation.

The helicopter is in the atmosphere. The atmosphere rotates with earth.

I could have sworn someone saud something about this... Oh yeah, at school.

This reminds me of a question that I have wanted an answer to.
If you were to float in the middle of the air, would you watch the earth rotate, or would you rotate with the earth?

This is my question. Except with a helicopter as an example.

Why does the atmosphere rotating with Earth have to do with my question?

What I am trying to ask is....explain your answer NS.

If it rotates with Earth, you don't see Earth rotate beneath you. Diagram...

Do you mean ROTATE, as in you see the ground TURN (like end up facing east and not north)? Or do you mean end up 3 miles from your origianal spot?

There is this theory if you hang an object fom the cieling and it is swining, it will hit a domino placed correctly on the table, only at a certain time. Because the Earth either a) rotates under it, or b) the force of rotation causes the direction to change.
