SPOILER ALERT

If you're interested in figuring out "The Answer" achievement on your own, beware of spoilers below...

Welcome to The Answer Collaborative Research Team!

We experiment and try to find The Answer.

Just post what you have tried here.

It's not:

Start up ubox 42 times
Explode Earth 42 times
Place earth 42 times
Place a body 42 times
Explode a body
Make earths temperature 42 deg Celsius
Bombard earth 42 times
Setting Time Step to 42.0 of any time unit
Setting Gravity Constant to 42.0
Setting Scale width of your view to 42.0 of any measurement unit
Placing an object called Science.
Placing an earth in a stars habitable zone

Hmmm, well, in The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy, it gave the question to the answer to life, the universe and everything as like 6 x 9 = 42. That can only work in base 13 though. However, if you do 6 x 9 in base 10, then it equals 54. Divide 54 by 13 and you get, big shock, 42. We could try using either 6x9=42, 54, or 13.

Deo told me it you just need to type 4 and 2 with nothing selected...

I divided 54 by 13 on my calculator and it gave me 4.153846154. Do you mean if you divide it and then multiply by 10 you'd get approximately 42?

Sorry, I meant 54 divided by 13, rounded to 1 decimal place, equals 4.2.

Seeing as this is a compilation of what The Answer is not, some might like to figure it out on their own, so maybe you should mark the topic [Spoliers] or something.

6*9 is also 42 in base 13 (tridecimal).

It's also not:

Setting Time Step to 42.0 of any time unit
Setting Gravity Constant to 42.0
Setting Scale width of your view to 42.0 of any measurement unit

Setting a date?

@chronos: We can't set a date.

Maybe put 42 in every numerical value where possible in the object properties?

Missed that sentence.

Wait, have you tried NAMING an object 42? I don't think that has been tried yet.

No, that would just be too time consuming to make. Douglas Adams made a puzle for it, where there were 42 coloured balls. The blue balls spelt out "42". Maybe we need to make 42 objects, each 42 in diameter, which take the shape of 42

Doesn't work.

Yeah, would probably have been too easy. At least thats something we can check off as not triggering it.

Perhaps this is going in the entirly wrong direction... It seems that something involving 42 seems a bit too obvious, however I cant think of anything else.

Maybe we are overthinking, maybe it doesn't exactly have to do with the number 42, maybe it has to do with "the answer to life, the universe and everything."

Try placing an object called Science.

But the answer to life, the universe and everything is 42.... But maybe it has something to do with the question.

With what question?
In "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" the answer to life, the universe, and everything was 42. But no one knew what the actual question was, which is why the answer doesn't make sense.

What about the hint?

"Result of millions of years of computation."

That doesn't sound like it'd involve the reference to Hitchhiker's Guide. I've tried reversing velocity and throwing time back at several million years but that didn't work. I'm thinking it  had something to do that'd involve the game doing... something for a long time. I thought if I went back far enough it'd show the big bang or something! But obviously not. :(

"the result of Millions of years of computation" is a reference. 42 was the result of millions of years of compupation.

Try typing 42 42 times, or Earth 42 times, or life 42 times, or universe 42 times, or everything 42 times.

It said the question was "What is 6 x 9" but that can only work in base 13. It also said that the answer and the question could not be truly known in the same universe.

So maybe you need to set up two simulations, name something (I'm not sure what) 42 in one of them, and 6x9 in another one.

Well, I said the nothing selected so you don't type it into a box, like the name or semi-major axis. Just type it without a textbox selected.

As soon as I saw the answer, I did what you had to do to get it(not gonna spoil it). It says that 0% have done this. Am I the first?

No, it means not even 0.1% of everyone who have bought the game have done that.

BTW guys, I added this achievement to the Wikipedia article on 42, which is the same one that shows up in game. To see it, just look at "Cultural References".

To receive the achievement, you must type 4, and 2. You can do this straight after start up, or click on a new simulation, and then do it. The on the menu to the right, a page with TONS of info all about the number 42, its means, and the book The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Universe

I found it! just hold 4 and 2 in an empty simulation!

Could the answer be God? It's possible because you know, religious people signify God to be the creator of everything, or "The Answer". Name something God???

I tried... 42 years went by and I think I lost 42 GBs on my computer. I only got like 42 hrs of sleep a week and I almost lost track 42 times. No one try this ever.
