I'm bored. X solutions found. Solution one: Draw planetary textures. Problem fixed. ;D
You can use my planetary textures (if you find them useful) anywhere you want, but please give credit if you use them publicly. They're hand-drawn, but I hope they look realistic. I'll upload new textures when I finish making them... Or not if you can't use them and don't want me to. :P
You're welcome to tell me what you think about the textures and what I can do better.
Here's my first Earth-like planetary texture (attached).
Links to the rest of my textures in this topic:

Awesome!
But why is it, no one ever makes one thats earth-looking. It seems every time I try to make continents its odd. My tripe planet is the closest i've EVER seen. People always want more land than water, and it's usually in one land mass.
-
Thanks. :)
Hmm, I could try to make one with continents. I don't care so much, I'm just too lazy to align the two sides... I want one vertical line with as much water as possible at the sides of the paper.
Not that continents automatically give that problem...
I think it's a good idea to make continents look slightly like a puzzle, like Earth. Because the continents break up and clump together as they move on the plates over millions of years, it looks like they fit together. I don't know if you've done that with your drawings... Your Tripe planet looks like it could be "puzzled". :P
I'll try making one with continents. It might take a few days though. To get so strong colors on a paper I think I drew five layers on top of each other.
-
It's a remarkably cool and out-of-the-box idea to make a planetary texture with colored pencils :D
Couldn't help but see what a bit of post-processing could turn it into :)
-
Hey where did oyu get a cloud texture?

I searched for cloud maps another day, searched for the same thing... Found two useful cloud maps, and made parts of them transparent. These are the results, the first one looks like the one Laura used(?):
-
darn it. I wanted a cloud map generation program, that makes them look tike the above ones, not some cheap clouds... I suppose with a bit of patience, I could go that with some real global infrared imagery.
-
I have never seen anything that can create realistic cloud maps like that from scratch.
It's too chaotic a system; it would take mindboggling processing power to mimic nature convincingly on this, I think.

Nope, GFDL ZETAC ran a 3 month simulation of a FAKE HURRICANE SEASON...

I'm fairly certain they didn't run it on an average desktop PC :)
If you're feeling adventurous, you could give it a try:

What is that... that you linked to?
Oh. I tried that. I CAN'T COMPILE IT!!!!!!!!!! ARGHHHHHHH...
-
Alright, just made this. How do I overlap clouds?

Photoshop. You have to make a new layer and copy your clouds onto the surface, and if you don't have that...I don't know what to tell you, or Sumopaint. http://sumopaint.com/

Here's my first Earth-like planetary texture:
Release them with a Creative Commons License(?).
-
And create a topographical map to go with it. I.e. a terrace-like effect of colors ranging from black (sea level) to white (highest point), with various shades of gray in between. From that, it would be fairly easy to create a heightmap, which would translate to a realistic distribution of light and shadow. It would reduce the apparent flatness :)
-

Thanks for suggesting it, I'm considering it.

I like the idea, but I think it would be hard to make... Maybe I'll try. :)

It's probably easier than drawing the shadows themselves :)

True, and that would also be cheating in texturism. I'll see if I can draw one. :)
-
I created a Mars-like planet with different angles... Biggest crater is about 500 miles.
P.S. Ignore the purple background.
-
Terraformed stage...
plus topography.
-
Nice :)
Although the topographical map has to be in the form of a greyscale heightmap or a normal map to produce geometry or the illusion thereof. Fractal Terrains can do both. For US2 use, the shading fractal terrains makes on the main texture is all that's really needed.
It's a very nice piece of software, but I don't like the craters it makes; way too regular and conical. They just don't look like impact craters (which is what they're supposed to be).
-
Here's my next map, with continents. Hope you like the new coast and water colors I've used. I bought some new pencils some time ago. :)
Next time I might make something unhabitable, considering a gas giant or rocky lava planet.
-
Me shall make cyclone thingies for your above map. Name oceans pl0x?
-
Kthx, awsum. :)
Sea names generated. And don't mess up my just right sea! >:( :P
-
Oh look, the Just-Right Sea is just the right size for hurricanes :P
So... I've evaluated them, and seeing the three that work.
The Warm Sea, The Okanic Ocean, and the Just-Right Sea
-
NOOOO!!! >:(
I'm sure The Just-Right Sea is prepared, though. Surely, the hurricane will appear on just the right moment.
-
I'm not sure what you expect me to do... so I guess I post them?
I'm using my default cyclone strength categories (Okanic Ocean), and warning system (Okanic Ocean). Since it's your planet you can change those, and you may choose cities (one for each of the three) in charge of the system and names.
So here's what YOU can do.
- Pick 3 cities to be in charge of the 3 ocean basins that have cyclones.
- Pick one unified CATEGORY system, multiple systems, or keep my default system.
- Pick the way they issue warnings, as in if there are seperate for each category, or for two or three, or base them off time, or anything you can think of, these are only suggestions!
- Pick the name lists for the cyclones, and choose when to name them at what category.
You got alot in your control. Choose wisely. (Hint: Don't make it TOO complicated for me that it's too annoying, and don't make it too easy that I wont continue to do it anymore)
Unnamed Cyclone/Weak Cyclone One has formed

Okay. Mokakka is in charge of The Okanic Ocean, Zafra is in charge of The Warm Sea and Perfek is in charge of The Just-Right Sea. Cities uploaded below.
- Pick one unified CATEGORY system, multiple systems, or keep my default system.
I'll keep your default. If you want to use another system, you can do it though.

I'm not sure what you mean.
- Pick the name lists for the cyclones, and choose when to name them at what category.
What are the category options? I'm not so much into cyclones, typhoons, hurricanes, tropic depressions, storms and all that stuff.
You got alot in your control. Choose wisely. (Hint: Don't make it TOO complicated for me that it's too annoying, and don't make it too easy that I wont continue to do it anymore)
Maybe you should choose the cyclone strength settings etc. yourself, you probably know more about it than me. Make it the way you'd prefer to make it. :)
-
Like My Scale below...
Weak Cyclone (30 kts - 64 kts) | Depression and Storm
- NAMED AT 35 kts
Moderate Cyclone (65 kts - 98 kts) | Cat 1 and 2
Severe Cyclone (99 kts - 143 kts) | Cat 3 and 4
Extreme Cyclone (>144 kts) | Cat 5
Cyclone Alert - within 48 hrs (4 iterations) of cyclone conditions. (orange along coast of land)
I have an idea. The just-right Sea needs to be just right, make a scale to your liking for the Just-Right Sea.
Something similar to the above. then all I need is a name list, they can be alphabetical, or non. I like to use random, but that's me. You can choose to cycle or not. Cycle is where, it's the end of the season, and the last cyclone formed. The next year, it starts on the next name in the list.
Don't need that yet. 2011 season is FAAAAAAAAAAR OFF!!!!!!!
-
For The Just-Right Sea:
Cyclones named if they reach 35 kts
Weak cyclones = 25 - 49 kts
Moderate cyclones = 50 - 89 kts
Severe cyclone = 90 kts - 140 kts
Extreme cyclone = 141+ kts
That scale seems just right.
-
lol you don't have to do it with same category names! lol
And I need name list.
-
But they seem just right.
... Name list? The order in which the hurricanes are named, like the first hurricane every year having a special name?
-
Name list: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml
-
Aha... Hmm... It's hard to generate non-Blaxian names, but I'll try. :P
01: Hutakka
02: Rovakka
03: Ekkok
04: Frakka
05: Jokokka
06: Zokakko
07: Ukokka
08: Satakka
09: Tokkok
10: Vakka
11: Malkakka
12: Pravakka
13: Kokkar
14: Vokakka
15: Nokakka
16: Kratakka
17: Kakkor
18: Rezakka
19: Prokokka
20: Hortakka
That should be enough so far. Each new year they're just repeated, so there could be a Vakka 1673 and a Vakka 1674 (if that were the years on the planet)... Let's just say it has a year equal to about 200 days, so there should be enough names. :P
Let's just say it is year 7439.
-
AHHHHHHHHHH "kka"'s!!!!!!!!!!! lol
-
It's just a common ending for names... ;D
-
Are these names for just the Just-Right Sea?
If not... Weak cyclone Hutakka has just formed.
-
Yes, the names are planet-wide. Interesting. What do the colors/dots/lines mean?
I guess orange are coasts hit by the hurricane or it's effects, and the purple and blue it's path...?
-
Terraformed stage...
plus topography.
That texture looks very nice. What did you use to create it?
On the other hand, what i use to create planet textures is Donjon's Sci-Fi World Generator. It also creates a load of stats and info, like thus, a snippet from the vast amount of info:
Biosphere :
Chemistry - Carbon
Lifeforms - Microbes, algae
Civilization:
Type - Colony
Population - 9.71 million
Society - Military Dictatorship
Tech Level - Spacefaring (orbital spacecraft, cybernetics, laser weapons)
I also use Fractal World Explorer, which comes with the AstroSynthesis software, a program that creates clusters of stars and solar systems.
-

Purple Weak Cyclone Sub-division (Tropical Depression)
Blue Weak Cyclone above Tropical Depression (Tropical Storm)
Yellow Moderate Cyclone
Orange Severe Cyclone
Red Extreme Cyclone
Orange bar - Cyclone alert (explained above in another post)
-
idk if this is the right one. I think I fail. But MS Paint failed at saving one every time. So idk.
-
I found a glitch in MS Paint. If you save an image while having the Text Tool on... It wont save.
-
Rovakka strengthens.
Hutakka dissipates.
-
Exciting,... I mean, oh nose!... Do you have any images to show Rovakka, just so I know where more people need to be produuu... I mean, to coordinate the anti...-cyclone... Defenses...?
(Remember, people are a renewable ressource. I've said it before, I'll continue to say it. :P... But! It's better to keep the ressource and not have to renew it, right... :P)
-
You are gibbering too much. I really don't have clue. Show Rovakka images? huh?
-
You usually make maps with the cyclones, but I see your post could be a comment on the last map.
-
wtf
Hmmm... that's odd. I thought I put the pic up. just a sec.
Edit: Fixed.
-
Nanodesu.
I made one, its kinda simple though.
-
Third planetary texture done, "Noxium" (the capital planet of The Blaxian Space State). I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it, but I think I'll improve it on the computer rather than making a new one if I should.

Looks weird and cool looking at the same time! :P
-
Thanks. :) Life on Noxium looks different than life on Earth. :P
The purple areas are polar forests, the closer to magenta areas are probably some sort of grasslands, if I want it to be. :P
-
I made a planetary texture, but it's made while I was in school (no colors, but will probably color it later) and I'll need a scanner. :P

WTF It got moved? Why? ???

WTF It got moved? Why? ???
When you use the acronym WTF for everything it loses its effectiveness. :)
I moved it because it was related to Universe Sandbox.

Here are some good pixel maps I made using a generator:

Thanks, Dan. You just made my day!haha
-
That was January. >:( >:D
-
I know, you idiot. Learn to take a joke. And that doesn't mean he can't still make my day.
-
You also bumped it.
Can this get moved to Everything Else?
-
You bump everything Darvince. ::) We all bump stuff. :P
-
Finally finished the lava blanet I must've been working on slowly for almost a year or something...
-
There's a creeper face! How dare you!
-
What Creeper?
-
This face right here, looks like a creeper in Minecraft.
-
cool, but the sudden transition between ice and lava seems strange
and a couple clicks in gimp or photoshop would make it look less color pencily and much more realistic!
and i don't see the creeper face
i see your mom lava
-
I don't see a creeper face, but a heart, forever torn in half on a lifeless planet...
-
I don't see a creeper face, but a heart, forever torn in half on a lifeless planet...
!!!
i see it too
*heartbroken*
:P
i liek!
-
</3
-
I don't see a creeper face, but a heart, forever torn in half on a lifeless planet...
Same here.
-
Ok who torned it apart, dat ish planutarie greefing !
-
I tore it apart, because it's a communist heart. :-[
-
The creeper face is within the broken heart. That's why it's broken.
-
So... The creeper was in the heart and then it exploded?
-
Kol... Am I right.
-
I saw it earlier, but didn't bother posting it.. lul.
-
Lava planet with ice????????
Blasmephy!
-
Ice? WHAR??!?!?
The white areas are the warmest... Red areas are coolest, then they become orange, yellow, white, blue, like stars and (in some cases) flames.
-
At the bottom and top.
-
Oh, that... That doesn't have to be ice, if you don't want it to! ;D
Well, if it has a thin atmosphere, the heat wouldn't be distributed evenly around the planet. Take Mercury for example, it's only 90K at its poles, which is more than cold enough for polar ice caps. This planet would probably be a lot warmer than Mercury on the surface, probably more than 1000K at equator (and the lava is ofc more than 2000K as the colors indicate). It could be molten by the star or geologic activity... Let's just say it was the star in this case.
-
Kthx, awsum. :)
Sea names generated. And don't mess up my just right left sea! >:( :P
Bump?
-
this topic is really interesting
*bumps back onto page
-
Thanks kol I want to draw more like it some day
-
What generator was used for the textures on the first page???
Don't EVEN ask for me to give you my textures...it'd probably take two days to load onto you people's computers XD
-
The ones that Bla didn't draw were done in Fractal Terrains 2.
-
I created a Mars-like planet with different angles... Biggest crater is about 500 miles.
P.S. Ignore the purple background.
program?
