You count birds. The way yu do it is birds at ONE time. So let's say there is 7 grosbeaks, you put seven, if 4 fly away, and 1 flies in, it is NOT 8 birds. IT's still 7 as you only have 4 birds in front of you now.
It also helps if you know what the birds are. ;)

Umm, if you have 7 birds, and 4 fly away, that equals 3, then one flies in, you get 4. So you have 4 birds.

Yes. You saw 7. Even if one went away, you still saw 7.
