Yes, I started on a 16x16 (18x18 with walls) mining central... Each floor has 256 blocks which need to be removed, so I slowly dig down into the cave systems. There's something exciting about working on a big project before really going down, instead of just making one ladder going all the way down in 10 minutes.

I ventured into the cave branches I could find, and it didn't seem like it was an epic cave, however. I found a zombie dungeon, and the lowest level was about 92 (which would be like level 41 in a normal world, but in size it makes the cave system extend down to what would be 28).

@Matty: It's a mod, I posted a link to it on the last page, hidden in a "...!!!".

Managed to climb the mountain, finally. The tallest leaf block was generated at y=256, the tallest block possible in this world.
Fantastic view.

I tried it. The top of some trees are chopped off. From the surface, you can usually see lava in the small caves. The surface is at 24, and the lava begins at 16 or 12. There is iron and coal everywhere (maybe the number of ores is the same in worlds with different heights, making the concentration much bigger in lower worlds?). Couldn't find any gold though, and not diamond either. I looked around bedrock for some time.
And slimes spawn on the surface.

So what are your inventory strategies?

This is my standard inv. I rarely change it, as it works fine for pretty much everything I do.
I've considered getting rid of the water buckets and the bed...

I have to have it a certain way, or I freak out:

Pickaxe|Shovel|Axe|Sword| is my first four items. The rest I don't care about arrangement, it's just those four tools I have to arrange exactly the same each time.

@ Deoxy: And yes, I also freak out if my inv isn't ordered properly. The bottom things are fairly easy to keep this way. I try to stop myself from organizing whatever drops into the two top rows.

In case you're wondering why I have two workbenches... Yes, it's to keep something else from stealing that spot while I'm using the workbench. It makes me rage.

But those just don't tell so much about your strategy. Do you carry iron around to fix your tools? Do you just make cobble tools if you lose them? Or do you expect not to lose them because they're made of diamond? Do you carry any wood? Is it an inv you use for almost everything, or only for strip mining/spelunking/...? Etc. Your stategies, not just a few items in your hotbar. You can also post those if you want, ofc, I'm just interested in your strategies. :P

I run around to see if it's a good seed until half the day has passed, then I sporadically begin to look for not-nice looking trees. After punching the first tree, I make a wooden pick, dig up a few stone, then the sun sets, and I dig into the ground and covers the top with some dirt, so I'm inside a 1x2x1 hole until the next morning.

i start out by punching a tree, make crafting table, make a wood pick, punch dirt, get stone, make stone pick, get more cobble, make stone axe, get lots of wood, make furnace. Which usually takes about 5 minutes. I head towards a npc villiage (i always happen to spawn near them for some reason), pilliage the wheat, and get a shovel to start a structure. I tend to make a hidey-hole on my first night where i do some mining and get some coal and iron. I turn the iron into shears and make a bed after i find sheep. Next is hoe and then a farm. I splunk a bit until i can get an iron armor. ravineing, enchanting table, nether portal, potions, the end, and so on :)

First, I form about six hundred babby. Then I hide in the middle of all the babby until the sun rises and I command them to chop the nearby forests with herrings. By day six, I have about eight thousand wood and a nice mansion with all the babby in a single room.
