You spent 20. :P

What do everyone think of:

* Not allowing the one who won the last game to win.
* Have the last winner manage the scoreboard and check the maps against the rules.
* The last winner can choose not to manage the scoreboard/rules, and someone else can then do it instead.

The one who manages the scoreboard can't play?
Then again, how can we get people to want to keep track of the scoreboard instead of playing...

1: The largest nation in the alliance would then manage it, or someone from the alliance would volunteer.

3: In any case you will have to volunteer. I can't force someone on the internet to sit and manage a scoreboard. They could just leave the thread, and if they didn't want to, I guess they might as well just do what they can to not win the game.

Matty: Yes.

But I'm a programming noob. I don't even know how to make it work with network or anything...
Yes, I'd like to finish it. But I think it would take... Maybe even years.

Mudkipz, there's a difference to playing it by yourself against an AI than with actual people.

I'll make it work with people if I can figure out networking. We'd still need a server/com to host it.

Making it work against AI...
So far I have made an AI that picks a random zone at first, and then claims random zones bordering zones owned by the AI usually until it is out of resources. However, sometimes it claims zones not bordering zones it already has.
There's no infrastructure on the zones either. And the map is just a grid of square zones.
You can conquer AI zones, but they won't conquer other zones. You win by conquering all the zones.

So it's just a prototype, sort of. Not fun to play in the current stage, but I think I know how to implement much of the gameplay if I have time. I don't know how to make a good AI that actually plans a strategy, and I don't know how I should make the game network though. And I tried to implement a bit of interface (mouse), but so far it failed.

do the score board checking turnwised.
as in
you must check the person who went before you before going

and

make some exceptions and rules regarding checking allies

But that would take forever. The scoreboard is updated once a round. And there's no way to check someone's diplomatic stance against each other. You can PM or chat privately to plan things... So either we trust people to update it fairly or we don't.

Also,

making scorer not play won't stop that either. People could pm each other to bargain to overlook something next game when it's their turn to score. So you either trust people or don't. If you don't, then do progrms or check it yourself. If you do, then let people check. Two people checking would also help prevent corrupsion.

Mudkipz, the problem with having everyone check every turn is that then a round will take much longer, because first everyone will have to take their turns, but then they will have to check the turns in the order they took their turn in when the scoreboard is updated.

Imo the best option is to have one person to check for a game, and then let people check if it is done correctly or not. After all, all you need to check is equally public for everyone, so you can point out any error the game manager makes.
Whether that person should be me or someone else and how it should be decided in that case... Idk.

I beg to differ. Either I'm stupid or something. I've never been able to check since like game 2.

You need the maps and the rules. You can use the rules or Blacalc to calculate the resources a nation may spend. Then you can use the Blacalc to check how much the nation spent on the map. Then you can change its production, zones, etc. It gets tricky in late game and in big wars, because you have to check how much other players lose too, and there is no easy method for that.

But when I check resources etc, I only use the rules and Blacalc.

Fiah: You're not stupid if you can't check it. It can get really, really hard in a late game war... In game three the results often ended up being a bit off when I checked the map every once in a while... Errors accumulate over many turns. It wasn't because I was trying to cheat, but it's really hard not to make just one mistake when checking a big map with many things to take into account. Usually it's not because I can't remember the rules, but the biggest problem is remembering how many of each thing were built/claimed/conquered from each player after and while counting them. I put them into GIMP and use a "difference" filter at high opacity to make it more clear or quickly swap back and forth between two map images of succeding turns.

I'd volunteer to be game manager. I'm not sure if it meant I couldn't play, though.
