If I did that, it'd probably have diplomatic consequences for the rest of the future games, because it would mean that you couldn't trust what I said. Why would I ruin all future games for myself to win one?

The game can not be equal currently, and the game wouldn't be fun if we were all equal all the time. The fun part is that you're equal in the start with rules equal for everyone, and then you go on to shape your nashun, and if you do it better than everyone else (or are lucky with diplomacy), you'll win, and then you become happy. If not, you lose, and then you become sad.
