I've removed some posts in this thread as it was derailed and turned into personal fights, also I think we should always remember this

Let's be careful about pointing fingers without evidence...

Dan has told me it wasn't DDR who pirated it. I think people should apologize for publicly accusing him without evidence, that wasn't fair.

Maybe he had good intentions. Maybe he wanted to cut down on all the 8YO chaos.

In case you're wondering what 8YO is, it's a term coined by Xriqxa, an abbreviation of "8 year old", as in reference to all the little kids who come here just to beg for the alpha so that they can play with it.

If it was Alpha 10, there's nothing that they could do about it. It requires Steam. If you don't believe that, one day I got a bit tired with opening Steam and closing the process in the task-manager. I ran the actual .EXE file for Universe Sandbox2 only to find you need Steam.

Even Dan said that it can't be run without Steam.

Honestly, I think these Steam guys should cut some beef of their process… or I need to get a new computer xD

i actually have disabled steam to few games that requires steam although i did not pirate it. so US 2 Pirating is still possible using steam apis or steam emulator

Many companies that have tried to stop pirates failed, and they sometimes ended up benefiting them!
(I remember one that shut down the servers temporarily due to pirates, and the only ones that could play were pirates.)

Guys, it's not all about you, the money earned by US2 is going to Dan Dixon's wellbeing. (Or so I think; stuff changes over time)
Anyway, It's not respectable to ask for torrents until you get an Alpha copy or something. No such thing as a free lunch, you should earn your way to stuff in life instead of cheating the universe out of it. Everyone else won't fare well after that.

Cheers!

I think the people downloading such an early version might even help sales - if people get the hang of it they will want a better version for sure and that means paying for it.

That being said, I fully understand Dan protecting his endeavour. He has every legal and moral right to do so.

Yeah, but I learned pirating the closed alpha of Universe Sandbox 2 is nearly impossible.

Even Dan said that it can't be run without Steam.

Any one specific pirated copy may be defective or poorly cracked, but as others have pointed out; any digital content can be pirated. Even software, which employs hardware dongles with encryption keys used upon launch and used to decrypt portions of the program, can be unlocked. The question is only how much effort it will take and how much it is worth to the one breaking it.

If the software is very expensive or very popular, it will be broken open quickly. If the software is neither of those, but is has some very effective protection system, then it will be broken for the challenge of it. One way or the other, it will be broken open, unless it has the ultimate protection... that no one cares about it. We would rather not use that method... however effective it may be ;-)

Therefore the idea is to make it moderately hard to copy, without at the same time making it hard for legitimate users to use it, and then try to kindly ask anyone with a pirated copy to enjoy it and consider it a taste of what is to come, so they want to become a paying customer and support the further development.

It is not even a case of "if you cannot fight them, pretend to join them". It is a fact that if someone does not want to, or cannot, pay for the product, then it is no loss for us that he enjoys a pirated copy.

The most terribly mistake any developer can make is to annoy and obstruct paying users, while pirate have free rum roam. It seems Giant Army understands this and has a fairly limited protection scheme, along with a decent price and full feature set.

Personally I would have liked a stand alone version a lot, as Steam is generally more of a hindrance than a benefit. It has locked me out of my paid for games once too often for the most trivial reasons.

We may release a DRM-free, stand alone version in the future... if we do so we'll likely be releasing that through Humble, so anyone that's purchased so far would get access to that. We currently have no time table for when this might occur.

the advantage of Steam for us is that it's super easy to post new builds and updates (it takes us just just a couple minutes and a few clicks) and they host all the files. The advantage for you is that updates just work.

Some more piracy detected. I'll send the link to a mod/dev.
