Brief sneak preview of Alpha 15
« on: June 02, 2015, 03:20:14 PM »
The "fun" thing is that an hour after uploading this video, it was made obsolete due to another major performance improvement ;-)

Wow, this looks really nice! I'm definitely looking forward to this! Also, do ring particle collisions heat the planets as a normal collision would in 15?

The performance improvement... improves the performance, so if it ran at all before, it should run good now.

Yes. That should be what's happening, although the ring particles are so low in mass that they don't heat it up the planet very much (so little you won't notice).

Either Greenleaf has a monster of a computer or divine forces have acted upon the performance issues.

I'd say that it looks a lot smoother and easier to run, and I see that grids have labels, but I'm not sure if that has always been there. I much preferred the GUI as a sidebar, maybe that could be toggle-able like Mac's dock?

Not in 15... but this year most likely.

If you add a lot of bodies, things will be slower. There is really no way around that.
With this update, you can add more bodies before it becomes too slow, though.
Now rendering&UI and calculation are separated, so even if the calculation runs very slow, due to complex scene, you are free to delete bodies or simply clear the scene, to get simulation speed up again. Previously it could be hard to use the UI when things were laggy.

A similar question was asked before but... can a planet actually heat up enough to gain lava lakes if it hits enough ring particles?

Ring particle size typically ranges from dust to the size of a house, so I would guess no.
