Using US2 for a science project.

Hello, US forums, and in particular Dan.

For a while now I've had some ideas floating around my head related to planetary habitability, including the possibility of habitable moons, binary planets, and orbital resonances (for example: could an earthlike planet form at one of the trojan points of a gas giant?)

While I realize that whatever I choose to focus on may require other software for long term simulations and any problems involving fluid dynamics, and may entail my renting time on a supercomputer, I would like to use Universe Sandbox for an initial "proof of concept" so I can determine whether the problems I'm looking at are in the scope of my abilities before going into more detail.

I may need to simulate accretion, so I am wondering if there is a way to quickly create large numbers of objects with nonzero mass (as opposed to particles). Ideally I would like to randomly generate a field of planetary embryos.

yesss!
i love doing accreation disks! and watching planets form!
it will lag but maybe thats because i have a crappy laptop

get a sun and all and then dot around 10-20 large planets or even stars
pause
explode them all into 100 pieces each
TADA!
i've run the whole thing through, and you get to watch planets form out of smaller asteroids and dust, it's pretty neat

I don't think you can generate/place multiple objects. The fastest would probably be, if you can accept having all the objects with the same mass, just spam-click them all around the system, and then using the chart mode -> random to get them in random positions, and then choose "make live". Then you have quickly made objects in random locations.

I made a system two days ago, a planet with a ring containing 1000 massive bodies. They weren't placed on a plane like normal rings, though, but they quickly moved towards the plane.
I'm planning to make a video of my simulation.

ok fluid dynamics can be kinda simulated using exploded objects to create a fluid? sort of?

i created this in 2 minutes :P

ok, maybe i only have 700 objects and not 1000
but thats only because my computer cant handle it

*50,000 object accreation disk in 0.1 seconds*

instructions for an accreation disk with objects of different mass

1. make a sun
2. make around 16 planets around (jupiter is not very dense so if you want to form planets this gives the best chance
3. explode them at escape velocity or at the default speed, whicever is higher
4. leave the screen for 10 minutes
5. particles will combine
6. you have accreation disk with random masses!
7. wait 5 more days
8. a random solar system!

What use would that be?

the simulation does not run by itself. if so, my computer should crash every 15 seconds.

I did creat an accretion disc....there s over 2000 objects since i had made explode over 7 planets and moons in 400 pieces each...Thats only the interior solar system...But its fun a lot of the objects have the mass of over 15 gr/cm3...i have one protoplanet forming at a really close orbit. Here are some pictures

heres how i get rid of the orbit patterns:
step up the time until orbits get unstable and then when the patterns are mixed up, slow it back down
this is, of course, if you dont want orbit patterns

Ok...i don t know why but it seem that it can't save if there s over 3000 objects. So i did creat an other one. On this one i have 1650 object (sun include). The biggest objects are 2 pretty small proto planets (248 km and 245 km diameter) others objects are 180 km and smaller. The accretion disk is still running and now after 7 years i still have 1650 objects. Sure when I did start there was at least 2000 objects...so there s was many colisions. Will it take a really long time to be able to see bigger planets?

Since putting stars at the center take much more time to creat proto planets, i did try to put a Jupiter planet as the center. My jupiter is 0.55 mass of a normal Jupiter with a density of 14.3 gr per cm3. When all the planets will be form, i ll just put the mass of the jupiter to a sun like...0,55 sun with a density of 14,3. For the distances of each orbit i ll just multiply by 10 :/

For now it work! after 13 games yrs i already have 14 proto planets who are over 1000 km in diameter. Colision happen more often than if i put a star since distances are smaller between the object and the saving is way much easier.

PS yes i know the center object is black but its because i did put the option emit light. so can see more well the accretion disk. The inner system have 2 main rings...all the 14 proto planets are in the inner ring.

I'm planning to make a video of my simulation.
Here it is. Planets forming would probably be similar to this. I'd suggest using combine mode instead of bounce, otherwise the planets will probably just be blasted into pieces again, like in this massive ring sim.

I already did fast forward it a lot, it took more like 2 hours to simulate, if not more. :P
You also need to have a sense of what's going on. :P
