torches are nearly as effective as glowstone, with only a 1 light level difference

while the wiki says torches are like 63% as bright as glowstone, it's because of an exponential lighting system. because torches are light lvl 14 and glowstone is 15

but visual brightness is just a value, what's important is to keep mobs from spawning which happens at light level 7

I think I may have beat or equalled the Epicravine in aswsomeness. What I've found is not just a cave system, but a full blown RAVINE, covered with lava at the bottom!

The screenshot is with 88 FOV.

Edit: Found a dungeon, Spider dungeon I think, not sure if the zombie just happened to spawn there or not.

Nice ravine.

Smjjames, can you cut down on your useage of especially diamonds? Because the rate at which you use them is not sustainable.
Also, I removed the poll in the voting center. I'm not going to disable fall damage/death, as it is a legit server. And please post in the topic if you post a poll, so we see it and can vote in it. :)

Kol.

Updating world map. Atomic should check it, to see if the road going through Solea is ok. I assume you and smjjames have discussed it.
The island which you adventured to west of Vatallus is also there.

As for the road, Atomic already checked out the route I made with torches and he said its okay. Other than a few trees near the beginning of the forest that were directly in the way and some leaves I had to clear out, the forest is essentially untouched.

I did make a chestpiece and helmet of diamond yesterday which could be the spike you see in usage of diamond, but okay, I'll watch my usage of diamond. I generally try to make iron tools instead and I am repairing tools to extend usage.

I'm also planning on making a building that goes into Solea slightly which marks the extent of the border tunnels that I made for the mine/quarry, but that shouldn't be a problem. That cave system also straddles the border anyway.

Ok. If you build something on the border, you should make sure Atomic agrees with it. The cave systems usually aren't considered a part of regions though (at least not something you would ask for permission to explore/mine in).

I didn't go very far, just several squares into the dirt area, and I did mark the corners with dirt and sand pillars. There is a cobblestone pillar nearby, but that just marks where the dungeon I found is.

I'll wait for Atomic before I do any digging or building in that part. I'll also have to move the road I made to the west, but its just the part in my territory anyway.

Also, can I have a heighfmap of the mountain range near the area I'm developing to the west, southwest, and south please? I have an idea for something and I just want to get a good idea of the height.

I made a trench of sorts for the area I wanted cleared, but use your judgement to define it. I'm not asking for it to be exact. Also, you'd think the sea would rush in to fill the gaps.

There might be a cave close to the surface in the area as I keep hearing zombie noises around that spot.

Kipz, your embassy was actually at that random torch near the lake, not at Plaidania. Unless... *shifty eyes*

As for the heightmap, I've looked at the mountain range and its pretty close to the altitude limit, but a heightmap will give a birds eye view of the area.

Does anybody know about making elevators in minecraft?

The sign in Spawntown about a suggestion for an observatory gave me an idea (besides, I like astronomy) to make one and other people would be welcome to build theirs in the area, however, it hasn't gone beyond the conceptual stage yet since I haven't decided where to build one.

I do have various other ideas though, so it isn't the only project I have in mind.

Also the island up north was a collaborative deal, everybody did their part, although admittedly you were the leader there and set up the underground base camp.

Why would you have an observatory in Spawntown when it is the least efficient way to observe space with all the lights?

Its NOT going to be in Spawntown, remember those mountains just to the west and southwest of the area I claimed? I'm thinking of building one somewhere in there, I'm just not sure of the exact location I want to build it.

I'll have to get creative with the telescope itself though.

Just use a minecart or boat elevator, it'll save you a lot of trouble and work

hmm making a telescope sounds intersting. Or a radio array, etc.

How close does Bla usually crop the chunks? I might ask him to nuke that island I've made a pit out of since its kind of messed up anyway. Unless said chunk includes the land to the west, then nvm.

chunks are usually removed because nothing has been constructed on them and bla want's to keep the map from growing too big.

Or to allow new biomes to generate, such as the rainforest/jungle in 1.2.

The only thing constructed there is a basic shelter with a bed, storage, and a crafting table.

Maybe I can fill the pit with TNT and blow it up someday.... :D

Edit: I could scale that telescope up.

i suggest you either just leave the pit alone and move on :P

or, cover it up with a layer of cobblestone :P Easy and it takes less than 5 minutes probably

...Anyway, my sky-slit telescope. Complete with solar filters :)

yeah, but cobble is mostly non-manuverable, so i've done a slit for simplicity. Domes are ok, but i do things practical, mostly. and dust doesn't fall upon minecraft :)
