A lot of people underappreciate the true size of planets. If you were to witness a nuclear explosion from orbit versus an asteroid collision, it would really not be very impressive—like a bulb compared to floodlights. Even if they did add a nuclear bomb, the only time when it will really shine would be when it's up against asteroids and other very small bodies.
