I'd guess it has something to do with the conservation of momentum code not liking a bunch of bodies colliding together at once.
Quick edit:  For clarity, this isn't on detonation, but when the fragments try to recombine.

Thanks for reporting. There's definitely an issue with the fragments and particles created from total fragmentation. I'll pass it along to the team.

This is one of the reason that Total Body Fragmentation is not yet enabled by default. We'll get this fixed and thanks for reporting it.
