Roche Limits and shape-changing atmospheres
« on: October 22, 2014, 05:09:09 PM »
SUGGESTIONS: A cool feature for Universe Sandbox 2 would be Roche limits. A body's Roche limit is the point at which the forces needed to orbit a body exceed the gravitational forces holding it together, causing it to break apart into rings. Is there any chance this would make it into the game (disable-able)?

Another suggestion: I know that if a body with an atmosphere orbits too close to a star, it loses its atmosphere, but could this be caused by gravitational attraction in the game too? This is a real phenomenon, but mostly it only happens with two stars orbiting each other or if a black hole is involved.

Just some suggestions for realism.

The roche limit will probably come when SPH is released since SPH will allow the roche limit to do what it does.

Great ideas!

We've been talking about adding Roche limits (and doing it without SPH) so that bodies will break apart when the gravitational forces are too high... so this feature will likely make it into the game at some point. But first we need to add the ability for bodies to fracture, which is slowly in the works right now.

And we're close to hooking up atmosphere mass to the component system which will allow it to burn away when things get too hot... much like how water works now.

Nice, well what abot tidal forses such as acuall water migration if a large body is nearby (this is shown on an obveus real life level with the tides with the moon and earth)

SPH would also handle that, I presume.
