Binary, trinary, quaternary star systems
« on: September 14, 2014, 12:26:54 PM »
I have always had difficulties in creating simply and clearly stable binary systems, today i just bought sandbox 2 but its even more difficult and for some reason planets cannot recognize a barycenter even with two stars and pairs of binary stars cannot bind to form a quaternary system, why and how can i get around this?

Currently there are no automatic "binary-orbit" or "barycenter" buttons. The developers should probably get around to that :P

Well i assumed that planets would just "feel" out the gravity well and fall into a stable orbit, but if two stars orbit each other all bodies become blind to them or their influence is diminished alot.

Well, when placing a planet into a two-body system, it's start velocity is only set for orbit around one of the stars, but it is affected by the other star as well, so it's orbit immediately decays.

Yeah we need those buttons

Yeah... the tools to put a planet in orbit around a binary star system exists in the original, but doesn't yet exist in Universe Sandbox ². This is on our list of things to do, but no promises for when it will be included.

I am looking forward to this, as I am rather partial to multiple star systems. I hope the feature will be a little more streamlined than in US1, as it could be a bit temperamental at times, but looking at the great work being done I am sure that will turn out fine.

To put this in, how about a "Orbit Barycenter" button?

We had that in US1, not sure why it hasn't been added back in yet.
