Shock waves from collisions
« on: September 05, 2014, 12:46:39 AM »
Georg just showed the first iteration of shock waves, and though certain elements, namely shock heating, are still missing, they look rather good. Ok, perhaps even a bit more than "rather"  :o

cool, earthquake.
with this collisions are the coolest and catastrophic

Coolness! :D

Maybe this could be added to the colliding object? Might work for baseline mode while the actual shattering would be done with SPH.

BTW, how is the SPH modelling going? We haven't heard an update about it in a while.

Total awesomeness!

I do have one question. Will you make the shock wave displace the clouds? Like what they do in those artist's renditions of asteroid impacts on History Channel documentaries? Or would clouds simply evaporate from all the heat? I guess that's why its a rendition.

Either way, this is going to be cool. :D

Looks fantastic, in the future, would it be possibly for the water to be displaced by the shock wave, forming a mega wave?

Right now it is on hold, while I am focusing on cleaning up the collision code and adding back a lot of different integrators, fixing bugs and other things. Rest assured, I will be quick to showcase any new development on the SPH front ;-)

I understand that very large shock waves can circle a planet multiple times. Can these do that as well?

They are looking very good, I must say. A lot better than the clipping explosions we have now. Wonderful!

Hopefully you guys can have impactors the size of the Chixiculub asteroid actually make a crater because right now, they don't.

Maybe when the body hits a planet with clouds, the shock wave will appear, but the clouds will scatter. I like this addition.

We actually do calculations like http://www.purdue.edu/impactearth/ which means that in the engine, the crater is calculated correctly. We know the amount of ejected material and the size of the crater.
The issue is that since most collisions (in this framework) are much larger, we had to set a lower limit on the rather costly crater visuals, and that limit was above this particular impact.

YES Finally Shockwaves

And I Think As The Shockwave Passes It Should Clear The Clouds

Really nice ! The only missing thing to make colision perfect is the ground melting/water evaporating as the shockwave passes. Otherwise, very good work !

That'll probably happen when they get around to heating, since the current product does not simulate thermal energy. There'd also be some problems with that since bodies heat as a whole instead of individual regions. Maybe this'll all start working when SPH is finally integrated.

Is a slider for changing the limit possible, to simulate small impacts but with high accuracy??
Now when the shock waves are coming, do you plan to add dust clouds that will affect the climate?))

Looks awesome! But as said before, maybe make it displace the clouds. (I know that would take a lot of work but it seems cool) Great work though :)

It runs quite smoothly, even on my non-gaming Mac. It's still in Alpah so there are bound to be optimization issues, but if it's THAT bad for you your computer probably isn't the best out there :P

It's available on Mac, Linux, and Windows. What more do you want?

I don't get your comment. Did the message you meant to respond to get deleted ?
Because if you are answering to RobertGimRo's post, optimizing a game means making it run smoother, not on other OS's

Yeah if we had shockwaves on the colliding body it would be enough until GA gets SPH done:
