I think this is just a standard UI design people use to make stuff look good.

This is pure coincidence.
We have gone through several completely different iterations of the GUI,
both in terms of design and functionality.
What you see is still a temporary solution until the final GUI styleguide is completed,
at which point the whole GUI will be changed to a new look and feel.

You are still working on that? I think the GUI serves pretty well in terms of looks, but I feel that in specific functionality (which buttons do what in what way) but especially workflow and UI layout (where do I find what button) could use some love.

After some tinkering you find the options you need, but some things are seperated while they are often used together and, to a much lesser degree, some things feel mushed together.
