Black atmosphere

Yes, I love universe, he's wonderful. I found something interesting. It's about any planet, like Earth, Venus, Mercury etc. But since this happends I have got one question. Why the atmosphere of the planet (like Earth, Venus, Mercure etc.) becomes black after collision? Was it planned? I'm totally "green" in this.

it's because one side is illuminated and the other side is not
