Keyboard/Save Issue
« on: October 10, 2011, 11:09:11 AM »
Hello everybody. ;D

I bought Universe Sandbox from Steam yesterday, and I'm really enjoying playing it. However, I have a few problems. I've done a brief search on the forums, but I haven't found much that can help me.

Firstly; I can't type. I can't name planets, and none of the keyboard shortcuts work (e.g. Tab). However, I can type in other windows, and if I load up the 'submit an idea' box within US, the keyboard works fine. I thought this might have something to do with having other software with text input running (MSN, Facebook), but closing them doesn't solve anything.

Secondly; I can't save my game. I get an error. I noticed that there is at least one topic on the forums in reference to this error, but it ended without a resolution. The game says "system saved" on the left half of the screen, and "error" on the right. It does not save.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit, if it's any help. My specs are: 8.1gb RAM, dual core AMD Athlon II X2 @ 3.0ghz, and a ATI Radeon HD 5450.

Thanks!

Edit: I found this in the logs. It repeats.

"Access to the temp directory is denied.  Identity 'ILLINGWORTH\VIBOX GA-FX5.1' under which XmlSerializer is running does not have sufficient permission to access the temp directory."

Is this an administrator/permissions issue?

I only have the one account running on my PC (admin), and User Account Control is switched on (I noticed that in Vista you couldn't get all permissions with it switched off). Just tried running Steam as administrator, but it didn't help.

Thanks though! :)

Edit; tried giving ownership of the Temp folder to ILLINGWORTH\VIBOX GA-FX5.1. Also, I was granted full access to the folder by opening it for the first time. No effect.

Hmm... that's a weird issue. I haven't seen that before.

It might be worth creating a new Windows user and see if you still have problem under that user.

We're working on a major update that will make fundamental changes to the way input is handled (among a hundred other things) so I suspect this issue will fix itself then. Unfortunately that update is some time away.

The only thing I can think of re: the keyboard issue, is the fact that I've recently started using a USB keyboard, and one with multimedia keys. I know from experience that some games loathe any modifications to input devices, but those are mostly MMOs with anti-cheat devices. I have a spare PS/2 keyboard that I'll try when I get home from work.

Unfortunately, logging into a new account didn't have any effect, other than restarting the tutorial. The permissions issue is really annoying. Does "system temp directory" refer to C>Windows>Temp?

@mudkipz will milk suffice? I'm all out of yoghurt... :'(

Thanks for helping, guys! The solution is gonna be something stupidly obvious, I fear.

And to eliminate other issues... Save does not work even if you leave the file name unchanged? Correct?

I'm having the same issue with the keyboard. I'm using a lenovo thinkpad and it worked fine when I bought it, and for about an hour or two afterward, then all of a sudden I can't type.

This might be the problem: "Access to the temp directory is denied"

Try right clicking and select "run as administrator".
