We showed off our forth iteration of the sun's surface among other things... and it's animated. We're going to try a similar technique for procedural gas giants.

You'll see this in the video.

I'd say that looks pretty good.

Dan, do you think you could do procedural sunspots?

what a about smaller planets to? and would they change in texture if they get closer to the star to. like earth truing into Venus or Jupiter turn into a hot Jupiter in looks? I just want to know.

This is def. on our list of long term features.
The process of evolving bodies arbitrarily (including visual surface changes etc.) is something we'll put a lot of effort into.

I believe so. It certainly won't be the flat bright spot that we get now.

Also, they'll have to make sure Gas Giants don't have actual craters since theres no surface to speak of, unless you go to the extreme depths maybe. Having a graphical effect similar to what happened with Jupiter when Shoemaker-Levy broke up and smacked into it would work.

I'd love to see fusion happen maybe supernovas can leave left over gas which without any input from the user will become a star. :)

You'll get to see an early version of this in the live demo when the video goes live.
