Bad save

Good evening,

I've a problem with a save. I placed my stars, rings, planets, asteroids and then I saved. But when I loaded the backup to continue, where 1 second = 1 second, the simulation always crash. Indeed, some planets are now in stars, hence the problem. I must remove the stars and planets for the simulation has no problem. It seems that the positions of objects are poorly recorded and it's really annoying.

I don't think there is an immediate solution, but this problem can be solved in the future?

PS : I've an other problem, I always must reselect my options (multi-processor, FPS...). I forget a backup button somewhere?

As for the saving of setting I don't think that is really implemented yet.  as for the crashing issue, It is hard to say as of yet.  I honestly don't think it has to do with how the celestial bodies are saved as it uses a standard co-ordinate system.  Here is the Objects.xml file that the sim uses to save position, mass, velocity, ect.

If you look in you documents/universe sandbox/logs folder there should be 3 files.  Try to load the sim and let it crash once more then copy and paste the files here so we might determine what is causing it on you.

Are you loading any custom textures or models?

I haven't changed my game. However, there are some planets with a custom color (Appearance --> color).

I believe understand the problem. A too great distance seems to be problematic for close objects.

I tried a new simulation and I have had the same problem.
I place a main star (mass : 4M sols, diameter : 120 AU), which is the center of galaxy, then the Sun at 28 000 light years, and I place the Earth at 1 AU from the Sun with the Moon at 380 000 km orbit around the Earth. I save and load the simulation and there is a problem. Moon inside the Earth inside the Sun, which is always at 28 000 light years of the center.
If anyone can confirm?

Indeed, after 10 AU, there is no problem.

Is there a file where I can change the number of decimal places after the decimal point to improve accuracy? I looked into a few files, but I found nothing.

Yeah... it's not that the save system isn't working, but that the loaded positions and values were causing an error.

(although still an error that is a fault of the software, but not the loading system specifically)

Thanks for sharing the simulation with me. That is a great and easily repeatable test case for fixing the bug.

Just wanted to pop in and say I'm having the same problems.  Specifically it is when I load with stars inside the Milky Way object.  Works fine if 'start paused' is selected, but all of the objects are in their stars.  Run the simulation and I get the error and black screen.  Tested with 1 star, with a few planets, then with 6 and the problem came with the six stars + milky way.

EDIT:  I created just a simple system and it too crashes.  Most objects pile into the star, press play = error.  Tested by loading some of the simulations that came with US and save and load and that worked fine.  So, as of right now, US is pointless for me.  Will try on another PC tomorrow maybe.

Edit:  Hmmm, after not having booted up US for a while, I just successfully created 2 star systems in one save and it loads without a problem....I'm so confused o_O

If the simulation isn't stable, then the objects (planets and stars) are either too close together or you're running the time step too  high (or both).

Okay, well I know it's not the time step because I rarely raise it above 2 minutes.  Must be how close the objects are then, but I think it must be related to the other bug we are discussing (objects spawning only at center) because all of the objects are in one place, except those furthest out.  The simulation doesn't agree with that bug at all, so I believe they are related because when I start the simulation everything is in the center.

The update 2.1.3 doesn't correct the problem? I have always the problem, but now the objects in the star (after the loading) seems eat/absorb by the star and the simulation can continue. But it's not great...

I realized a new test.

The most massive object is at the center. A Sun orbits around him at 33 000 AU and a planet (Earth) orbits around this last in 70 days (50M km). An other Sun (Sun 4) orbits at 29 000 light years with planets, Earth is at 1 AU.
I save and I load the simulation. The Earth of Sun 4 disappeared, but the Earth of Sun is always there. Even thought the first (Sun 4) was far away that the second (Sun).

I'm sorry that you're still having a problem. I'm going to release another small update (with bug fixes only) in the next few weeks and hope to address this issue then.

And just to be clear... you saved out that file and posted it here without an edits, correct?

And you create a simulation with 5 objects, save, reload, and now there's only 4?
