Background Music
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:49:45 PM »
Hello all,

I bought the game today (on sale on Steam). I'm really enjoying it so far.

First thing that I noticed was the lack of music/sounds/etc. Strangely enough, I feel that even if it did have music, I would probably turn it off and pick my own anyways.

So what music do you play in the background while enjoying this awesome sandbox game??

I've found the following albums to fit rather nicely to the "atmosphere" of the game:

Jan Jelinek - "Loop Finding Jazz Records"
Isan - "Lucky Cat"
Mu-ziq - "Brace Yourself"
Jonas Bering - "Sketches for the Next Season"
Aphex Twin - "Melodies from Mars"
Boards of Canada - "Boc Maxima"

How about you? I'm always open to music that fits the mood of this game :D

100% agree.. was thinking how great the game/sim would be with music but it's just as easy to put your own on

Try some X BtF music!

Just got the game on Steam and I think it's great. Some music that you guys might enjoy while playing in the US:

Benn Jordan - Pale Blue Dot: A Tribute To Carl Sagan (ambient)
sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXncxT2eYx0

Gustav Holst - The Planets Suite (classical)
sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1f8HjIkU3M

NASA Voyager Recordings - Symphonies of the Planets (ambient, little eerie at times)
sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAPNfKADA7Y

Also, you might want to look up this ambient music producer that goes by the name "Carl Sagan's Ghost", he releases his stuff for free (or at least most of it).

There's been a thing about this on the idea spreadsheet for a bit now.

Go add your vote to it!  :)

The new Explosions in the Sky album, 'Take Care, Take Care, Take Care' goes nicely.

Ambient/PsyAmbient  music works great for Universe Sandbox. You can also check out http://www.di.fm/ and just use one of their many electronic streams to play while using Universe Sandbox.

This is a fun thread.

The track I've pulled up the last few times I've demoed Universe Sandbox for friends is:
Spunkshine - "Smoked"

And many tracks by Sigur Ros work wonderfully.

I like the soundtrack of the movie 2001 A space odyssey. It contains nice classical tracks (like Also sprach Zarathustra). In my opinion the movie has the similar atmospere as the game

I loop the Mass Effect "Galaxy Map" theme song in the background. I used to just stay on the Galaxy Map screen just to hear the music and it makes it all the better playing this sim with that song :)

the chemical brothers of course :)

I like the idea of the Mass effect galaxy map loop.
may just have to set that up myself.
although Shepherd never had to deal with exploding planets :)

The X3:reunion soundtrack fits quite well with the space theme. For instance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi1M747Iw48

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XESJ_Hgt3KA&feature=related   is also pretty good :P

I agree.

I played the demo, and i'm debating on purchasing the game at the moment due to some financial dificulties, however i thought the lack of sound was just a part of the demo.

It really needs some futuristic calming techno lol

Well, there is no sound in space. Not to be rude, but if you passed 8th grade science, you should know that. Sound cannot be transmitted in a vacuum. But, I see where you are coming from, it does start to feel a little weird controlling the universe without sound.

And many tracks by Sigur Ros work wonderfully.

Sigur Ros and Radiohead were the first two artists to spring into mind for me.  I'm loading 'OK Computer' before I fire this up for the first time.
