Distance Chart Mode
« on: May 17, 2010, 10:40:21 PM »
I thought another chart mode.
Distance Chart (Mode).
It makes a chart with the selected object, the main point, and the other objects, as pointed where it is closer to the selected object.

I thought it would be cool since you cant really tell the distance from the selected object to the object in the "sky". (except the point that you can hover them and check the distance from the LARGEST mass star its closer. But this one is pretty different.)
(i.e.) The Sun and neighboring stars, and the Solar System, as seen in below.
Note: Diameter isn't accurate, as I used Mercury, Mars, and Ceres as one point and Venus and Earth as 5 points. Jupiter isn't in scale, also.

Don't draw the text. Use the font tool, but since it's just a quickly drawn diagram, whatever.

I haven't ever given that thought... Nice! I like that idea! YAY, I hope Dan puts that in. It sounds simple.

Continued from first post:
And there would be a slider to measure to make objects go closer to the selected object (like the Random slider).
(i.e. Sirius A and B)

There should be a ruler. :P
A tool you can use to measure the distance between any two bodies in a simulation.

The ruler should show relative speeds, combined mass, relative masses... etcetera...

Yes, I've been thinking of that too for some time. A bunch of rulers (that would update in real time) would be soooo useful.

I just added a 1st pass of 'Distance' chart mode to the upcoming 2.0.4 version.

There's still lots of work to on Chart mode including adding axis labels (like in Naru523's drawing) that I'll be adding over the next month.

Tell me more about how you'd like to see the ruler feature work.

To work it, you click on anything, even empty space, and click on anything, even empty space, to make it determine the distance.

Click on a body, then a line appears following your mouse, and when you click on another body you get the distance between the two bodies.
I don't think it will work so well if you click on empty space. There are three dimensions, so how is the ruler going to know all three coordinates on a flat image?

I think, unlike the move button... You should be able to...

a. You can select X, y, z directions. But why measure blank space?
b. You can select any point on a trail (past and projected)
c. or on any two bodies.
