Solar System Jumble
« on: May 08, 2010, 11:09:22 AM »
I downloaded Universe Sandbox 2, and my favorite dateset, Solar System Jumble is gone.  Where can I find this one again?

Thank you.  It isnt in there, but I did take a look.  Does this set come with Universe Sandbox 2?  Do other people have this?

You're right, Solar System Jumble isn't included in Universe Sandbox 2. I've attached it here, but currently there's a strange bug where Jupiter, Uranus, and Saturn don't show up when you open it. I'll aim to fix that in a future release.

To open the file, download it, then drag it into the Universe Sandbox window or double click on the file to open it in Universe Sandbox (currently double clicking the file only works if Universe Sandbox is already closed).

However...

You can make your own Jumble with the new random feature of Chart Mode.

1 - Load any simulation ('Our Solar System - moons, asteroids, & rings' works well).
2 - Turn off Gravity (Set G in the upper left to 0 (zero))
3 - Click the Chart Mode button
4 - Delete the Sun (if you want to, this make it easier to see the planets up close)
5 - Click the "Random" button in the Chart Mode list.
6 - Click the "Make Live" button.

- If you don't turn of gravity (step 2) everything will be in orbit around Jupiter once you hit Make Live.
- You can use the slider in Chart Mode to adjust the spacing of the planets
- Currently it doesn't check to see if planets are inside of each other, so you may get overlapping planets when you hit random.

I've fixed the strange problem with disappearing planets. This fix will be in version 2.0.4.

And I'll include this simulation in future releases of Universe Sandbox 2.

Thank you very much!  It looks great!  Just to let you know, we have been using this as a teaching tool in our planetarium shows, and its just a fantastic program.

Awesome. What kind of planetarium and how are you projecting it?
