I sometimes wonder if the Google fiber expansion is just people being like lambs to the slaughter for some unknown potential tyranny in a few decades.

Well Google is intentionally making a highly superior deal to most other ISPs; capless, fast, fiber optic. Most people will go for it. But then when Google has a majority of internet users under it's thumb, it could do almost anything.
