Ringworlds in Universe Sandbox 3
« on: August 28, 2013, 02:08:55 PM »
Simple, it'd be nice to add ringworlds to the simulation.  Objects that suround a star and have huge mass compared to planets.  Here is 2 ringworld examples.

I added it to the community list, it's line number 275 (273), http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,3094.0.html

Just because a game called Halo uses ring worlds as a weapon does not mean a ringworld is a game concept.  Ringworlds were around in movies and books long before Halo existed.  A ring world is a circular planet like structure with incredible mass around a star allowing people to live on it as if a normal planet.  I'm fairly certain a structure of this mass would effect a solar system, as it'd require enough material that'd deplete a great many planets into practically nothing.  Moving all that mass in closer to the sun.

But yea whatever.  I figured some trolls would arrive and shoot this down by making fun of it.

Sorry; Unlocker tends to do that sometimes.

Oh come on, was a joke. People have no sense of humor. It is nice indeed, but can easily be done using modeling and texturing, even on US2.

A joke? Your joke resulted in 3 instant no votes.

Simple modeling?  This is a structure that's mass must be centered on the object it's around.  It will basically add it's mass to the object it orbits.  Then again other things might happen if for some reason the object in the center of it loses mass or gains mass so it might be interesting.  Your method basically says add a moon to the exact center of the star without it colliding or combining, and set it's mass to 100 times the star.  It's a structure around the star.  Not an invisible object at the center of the star with it's graphics set outside the star.

I don't get the ringworld concept. Could someone explain to me what it is? heh

A ringworld is an artificially created world, that is a ring around a star.  It creates it's own gravity and atmosphere by spinning.  The back side is metal and contains most of the stuff required to run it while the inside, facing the star, is the living area that has terrain like any other normal temperate planet depending on how it was built.  There is an inner ring which acts as a day/night cycle. Wile you spin, the inner ring creates shadow and heat protection to cool things off as like what happens on the earth when it turns night.  A ringworld is so massive that it is basically like having 200+ earths flattened and laid out around the sun.

Halo's ringworlds don't orbit stars and they are tiny.  Those are weapons of mass destruction, not meant to hold life.  Comparing a real ringworld to Halo is a horrible concept as Halo's rings have less logic and break some of the rules.

Here's a few screenshots of my ringworlds around different stars in Star Ruler.  They take billions to trillions of metal, electronics, and advanced parts to build and can only be built around stars.

Apparently I only have one good screenshot at the moment of one I built around an unstable star.

I pulled a few examples of what a ringworld would be like off google.

Exterior:

It depends on how such an object would be handled in US3. In US2, it's just treated like any other body, but with a fancy texture.

I'm assuming you mean a full-on ring world, with its own mass just like any other object, but where something would have to collide with the ring to actually collide, and an object could pass through the center of the ring if it does not.
I don't know enough about how US3 will work from a programming perspective to be able to tell you if that would even be possible, but regardless it is a very complex object, mathematically. There are relatively simple solutions for the force of gravity at a point along the x-axis relative to the ring, and at points on the plane of a ring or at a great distance from the ring (where it can be treated as a point mass), however to calculate the force due to a ring at all points relative to the ring is a bit of a tricky thing, especially if one considers tidal forces. To be able to do so quickly (as in, in as few steps as possible) so as not to cause performance drops would be quite a feat for something that is meant to be run on an everyday computer. But again, that's relative to what I know of how US3 will work, which is a very, very, very small amount, if at all. For all I know, Dan could have a few tricks up his sleeve that I don't understand. ;)

If it is possible, then I would think it should wait until an update sometime after US3's release, as it is not necessary to the development of the game as far as I know, and again, because it is such a complex object.

I think I said "ring" far too many times in all that, but that's ok I guess.

Yeah. Never done the cals, and never will, but I believe this would be an impossible world. Even if build out of steal the physics would be impossible.

If heavy enough it would collapse on itself, and if light enough it would not have sufficient strength to hold the speeds a spinning structure would require to create 1g.

If gravity is created by other means (other than centrifugal force) maybe.
