Glitch
« on: July 20, 2008, 08:41:17 PM »
When I run both either the "moons 75, orbiting earth" system or the "moons, flat disc" system, and switch the collision mode to "combine" this happens:

The screen flickers and glitches, and the only way to stop it is to close the file.

Well that's very interesting. I'm sorry you're having this problem.

So does this happens every time? With either system? I've never seen it do this (which makes it hard to fix).

If you could do the following it might help me track down the problem:

1 - Run Universe Sandbox

2 - Make the problem happen again.

3 - Press Ctrl+F12 to take a screenshot with the UI. (I'd like to see another version of the problem)

4 - Now go to the main menu and click on Feedback

5 - Check the "Include ..." checkbox to add the screenshot that you just took to the message and be sure that "Include log files" is checked.

6 - Include a short comment (like “moons glitch” and your email address... to let me know these are from you so I can follow up.

7 - Click on Send.

Thanks for bringing the problem to my attention.

Actually, that brings me to another glitch I'd like to mention. Whenever I try to send feedback, it says
Quote
please check your internet connection and try again or use the 'send not working, use your email' link
Only problem is, the email does not include any attached files.

A number of people have had problems sending feedback using the built in tool. I guess this is effecting somewhere between 10-20% of all users.

If you could manually attach the log files to your email, that would be great as I'm not sure what would be causing this.

The log files can be found in:
My Documents\Universe Sandbox\Logs

The screenshots that you take can be found in:
My Documents\Universe Sandbox\Images

Does this happen to you every time?

Thanks again for letting me know.

I get a similar problem after starting the program.  This image flickers while the program is idle.

I have sent the screenshot and log file as requested earlier in the thread also.

Thanks for sending me your logs.

  • Does this always happen? Or just sometimes?
  • Does it go away after you load a system or is it there the entire time?
  • Does closing the menu make it go away? (Press F1)

I get the same problem as Jareth. It seems to be something to do with the dust created during collisions, and only happens on some files, like the 75 moons orbiting one and sometimes my own created files.
Clearing dust will stop the glitch, though it will return as soon as another collision occurs.

  • Always. If enough moons are present, and collision mode is set for combine.
  • It goes away only when the system is reset, o a new one is loaded up
  • Nope

And to Pete_g: clearing the dust does not stop it for me.

Jareth86: Thanks for the additional information.

Pete_G:
If you turn off new Dust from being created does the problem still occur? (Click the Dust button in the View group to toggle dust creation on and off).

And to both:
Also does turning off Trails help?  (Click the Trail button in the View group to toggle trail visability)

No, unfortunately it does not.

All apologizes to everyone on my previous post about my problem with the "Glitch."  :-[

Turns out that 3 hours after I posted my message, my video card had a melt down.

Here's a picture of my card just as it was when I pulled it out of the machine less the cover.

This is what I get for believing in the Video Card Cleaning Fairies.  :-\

I've been down since my last post but now I'm back up with an SLI 8800 GT setup!

No worries... The photo is great. :)

Although Jareth86 is still having this problem:

- Have you upgraded your video drivers recently?

I remember getting some green triangle flashes in Oblivion and it was because my video card was overheating. - Any possibility your card is overheating (that seemed to be BattleShipRon's issue)?

- And try erasing the trails (Ctrl-T) and erasing the dust (Ctrl-D). Does that make the problem go away (if only temporarily)?

- And it doesn't do this if the combine mode is bounce? Correct?

-I upgraded about a year ago. I just upgraded them to try and solve the problem, but no such luck.
-Erasing the dust and trails did not solve it either, nor does shutting them off completely.
-It never seems to happen when its on bounce, though setting it back to bounce does not fix the problem.

As for overheating, I don't think it is. It gets hot eventually if I run the 250 moons sim, but it glitches way before then, and I've got a big card fan blowing on it.

Update: I've found that if I delete impact marks, the problem goes away, though only temporarily.
