My Science Fiction Model of the Universe
« on: October 05, 2011, 06:29:59 PM »
I am writing a novel that takes place in many areas of the galaxy so I became interested in simulated the universe of my novel. I'm just getting to the space part so I set to work. So far it only contains our galaxy. The only stars are ours and Alpha Centauri A and B. I've added in the planets of our solar system, plus another hypothesized planet called Nibiru. I will add Typhe shortly which is another hypothesized planet. I've also taken care to add in the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt as accurately as I could. The dust particles used for our galaxy are relatively low, this ensures faster speeds for everything else. I've also kept the two belts in our solar system low on particles, so that won't give us a problem. Just so you know, I labeled the sun, 'Sol'. Which is the secondary name because I don't like calling any celestial object anything with 'the', since it's leftover from us gradually coming out of the idea that God made us the center of everything.
Anyway here's the system.

any excerpts? :D whats it about

did you buy universe sandbox solely for this reason? or was it other fascination that brought you here?

I don't wish to post my story on the internet about it as that is just asking anybody to steal my idea. I thought posting my map of the galaxy would be harmless as you don't really get any storyline from it. Maybe I'll post some excerpts at some point but creation of the story is going to down as I'm creating my Universe.
Originally I bought Universe Sandbox just cause I thought simulating our galaxy would be cool and then I'm sitting at my computer and I'm thinking, "Wait a minute? I've been working my novel longer than I've had this software!" Then I set to work.

Update:
I am on the verge of adding the Gliese 581 system.
I calculated the approx. coordinates while in business class today. After a little bit of tweaking I will add it to the simulation.

Just looked it up. Although only 1 planet is known, that planet being habitable makes it interesting enough to add in here. I'm also going to do Pulsar J1719-1438.

Problem:
I can't get the pulsar planet to stay in it's proper location when I save. After some experimenting, I've found that it's the proximity to the pulsar. Is there a way to work around this without compromising the realism of the simulation?
