Steam version doesn't work; non-Steam version works
« on: July 09, 2011, 01:35:02 PM »
I've just bought the game from the Steam sales and tried to launch the program and this happens...

The main window pops up like this:

And then the Windows notification sound keeps playing/looping. (the sound you get when you insert a usb)

Can't get into the program or do anything with it. Just stuck there.
In the task manager, the application is still responding if that's of any help.

I've attached the 3 logs found in the logs folder in the Documents.

Any help will be much appreciated. :)

I have a similar issue, I get the same screen but not the sound loop when running the Steam version.

I have tried all the options I could find to resolve this issue (i.e. update and repair the distributables, delete and reinstall the app, etc.), with no success.

However, I downloaded the free version from here and it ran with no problems, so it would appear this is an issue specifically with the Steam version.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit, next week I will have an opportunity to try this on a Windows XP machine, will be interesting to see if that changes anything.

I am also fully up to date on drivers, have restarted, and still have the same problem.

To be clear, I have tried all the options listed in the stickied help topic in this forum.  Nothing has helped.

Can you provide any insight as to why the free version downloaded from this site would work but the Steam version would not?  That seems like a pretty relevant point to me.

Here are both sets of log files - the 'NoSteam' ones are for the downloaded client from this site which works, and the 'Steam' ones are for the Steam downloaded client, which just sits there with the planet circling the star as posted above.

The other two files, since you have a 4 file max limit on the board:

That's really odd.

I separated this from the original thread since this is a different problem altogether.

I'm going to add some more checks around the Steam specific code in the next release. I'm really not sure why this would be happening as it's hard to solve a problem that I can duplicate.
