Dan in the next update you should make the moon be able to affect the tides on earth.

It would acheive my gas giant being torn apart by a moon the size of uranus :)

That would require hydrodynamic simulation, which would fit much better in collisions as well as Roche limit simulations and stars.

Tides... even with what you describe probably wouldn't affect much, maybe pulling the gas up a totally obvious 200 feet. ;)

LOL @ "a moon the size of Uranus." Sounds funny.

But, yeah, a gas giant doesn't have water, so all it would do is make your planet oval shaped, maybe.

But, a good idea none the less. I would like tides, actually.

Tides are so tiny that it is ridiculous compared to a global scael.

If tides are so strong the distortions are clearly visible from multiple object radii away, the object would be torn apart. 'nuff said.

Simulating tides in a collision or breakup event falls into the category of "features that wouldn't actually be very useful but still manage to use up all your computer's processing power."

While this would be interesting, as others have pointed out, the visual effect would be minimal.

What about two Neutron Stars orbiting a red giant at 8 days?

the shape of the Red Giant Would be epic.

Or, Or, that could mess up my entire simulation of a binary gas giant pair orbiting at several days around eachother...

Anything orbiting a red giant with an 8 day period would be inside the red giant's surface  ;)

However, this does raise an interesting point: in the case of extremely diffuse objects like giant stars, material could be sucked from one object to the other.

Well with atmospheres being added in a future update, it might be possible to give it tidal effects.

Lets make it a real universe sandbox! SIMULATE EVERYTHING! Life, spaceflight, what it does now, quantum mechanics, strings, atmosphere dynamics, fluid dynamics, ocean currents, solar flares, earth's core/mantle and plate tectonics... and even... PHOTOSYNTHESIS!

Yeah and make it so you can zoom right in and watch simulated people playing with a gravity simulator on their simulated PCs!

NASA's supercomputer would crash trying to simulate one habitable planet alone.

So I can demonstrate to Bill O'Reilly and Fox News viewers how the tides come in and how they go out  ;)
