Yes spam has become a big problem. I know as I help delete it. They are looking into fixing this problem, but it could take a while. For now just please ignore it.

there are plenty of forums out there on the internet that don't have this problem

one solution i can think of is to just require accounts be approved manually

i am on a few forums where they do this

if there's not enough manpower to do that (though i can't imagine it requires more than one or two people who check the registrations every other day or so) i would be glad to help

We have had manual approval of accounts before, but there were too many registrations to handle. It's not always so easy to tell a new user from spambots.
