Complex Map Game - I'll work on the rules along the way.
« on: December 27, 2011, 09:40:19 PM »
My idea for a grand strategy game is this: you create your country with sliders and stuff:

Ideologies:
This section will allow you to choose the ideology of your country, such as socialist, democratic, fascist, communist, capitalist, social democracy.
Religion:
This section will allow you to choose the religion of your country. Animist, Shamanist, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Confucianist, Buddhist, Taoist, Hindu, Islam, tolerant, or a lack of religion will be some of the many choices.
Government Type:
This section will allow you to choose the type of government, such as republic, dictatorship, papacy, empire, and kingdom.
Culture:
This section will allow you to choose a predefined culture, or a custom one.

That's some of the few sections, basically my idea is based off of Thrive. However, it won't include space.

I'll turn this into an epic map war if you want. Once you set up your country, turns will be taken both to change the borders of the country using a map, and to change policies, manage economics, carry out trade and diplomacy, and so on.

Format:
Name of Country:
Color (RGB code):
Ideology:
Government Type (mostly based on the ideology):
Religion:
Culture:
Economic Policies:
Political Policies:
Other information:

Currently that'll be all to set up when this gets to be an actual map game. I want to revive what died, and make it better and more complex. Any takers? :)

I'll make it more complex as we go, I'm don't really want to take the time to do it all at once.

Sounds so much like EUIII that I know it's not original, but sounds more complex than even Map War 2.

It's not like EU3! In EU3 you choose real life countries, and it does not allow you to choose your culture, religion (except if you are catholic, but then only to Protestant or Reformed), ideology, political policies, color, and name. You can't make up a country without complex modding and stuff, my idea is to actually make a country in game. At least in Steppe Wolf, you can choose your religion to whatever you want.

That's the point, it's supposed to be way more complex, but I'll try not to make it too difficult on you, I'll guide you through the steps.

Its too complex. This couldn't possibly be a forum game. It'd be too difficult and some of the factors have no relevance to any part of the game mechanics. There doesn't seem to be much of any mechanics at all, for that matter.

Ideologies:
This section will allow you to choose the ideology of your country, such as socialist, democratic, fascist, communist, capitalist, social democracy.
Democratic is not an ideology, it is a way of choosing who should be able to make laws and rule the country. Like dictatorship also is.

Religion:
This section will allow you to choose the religion of your country. Animist, Shamanist, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Confucianist, Buddhist, Taoist, Hindu, Islam, tolerant, or a lack of religion will be some of the many choices.
Will it have any effect on the gameplay (like how many resources you get, if they exist)? Otherwise, it might be better to just let you write anything you want rather than having to choose from some of the existing ones, which will never cover all religions which have existed anyway.

Government Type:
This section will allow you to choose the type of government, such as republic, dictatorship, papacy, empire, and kingdom.
This is where democracy belongs (republic).

Culture:
This section will allow you to choose a predefined culture, or a custom one.
Can you give an example of a predefined culture?

Interesting game, but I think it is missing some sort of numbers like resources, which you can objectively obtain based on your choises. If ideologies, religion, government type and culture have no effect on it, I think you might as well just type in anything rather than having to pick specific ones.

Also kol @ Mudkipz's explosionism.

I'll make a little profile incase this does get off the ground.
It'll be based on the nation in the most successful game I played in Civilization.

Name: (haven't really got one yet, will edit)
Colour: 166, 65, 62
Ideologies: Facist Capitalist
Religion: Judaism
Government: Dictatorship
Culture: Strong religious ties, only friendly with nations of same religion. Strong affinity for military, technology and economy.
Economic policies: strong industry and intense trade.
Political: citizens have standard rights. Joining military or achieving industrial prowess grants perks.

I'll join too.

Name of Country: Blaist Union

Color (RGB code): 000, 255, 000

Ideology: Blaist Communism

Government Type (mostly based on the ideology): Mixture of direct democracy and elected, representative collective leadership.

Religion: None

Culture: Blaist culture - based on collectivism, science, rationalism, solidarity and sustainability, when people aren't too addicted to gaming or drawing cities.

Economic Policies: Planned economy, free public transport, free healthcare, free education, patents are non-existant, all software is freely available, heavy focus on science, industry, technology, self-sufficiency and sustainability. Very limited trade. Effectively having a 100% tax rate, the state encourages work by improving working conditions, replacing workers with technology and promoting the Blaist culture.

Political Policies: Cars are available public services outside cities similar to taxis, freely available public bikes are a common sight in many towns and cities when the public monorails don't block the sight, all TV channels are nationalized and always broadcast with focus on education or information, only healthy food and drinks are produced and tobacco, alcohol and drugs are illegal. Citizens have several human rights including fully free speech, plus rights to free healthcare/education (etc.) but don't have "rights" to private property or to discriminate based on their own ideas. Books and newspapers are no longer produced, but exist on the internet, where they're freely available. Punishment is low, but the state focuses heavily on rehabiliation.

Perfect, that's enough. Time to use this map to put your countries on. The turns you use to put your country there are free. The order in which the players put the countries determines the turn order. I called the map file WorldWarPlacement as the game hasn't started yet. It will start when all the countries are in.

And Mudkipz, do you want Mud and Japancakes or just Mud?

Okay, religion does matter. Crusades are able to be called on a country. This actually gives you more military and other increases to allow you to take more from a country. I'll make a chart of the crusades you can do. However, you can specify if you don't want to crusade, but to simply war with the country, since some of you may actually hate crusades.

Refined: Atheist isn't a religion, so... it won't be able to call crusades and others can't either. In case you didn't read the edit on my post.

Why can't I make rules right, I ramble on and on to make rules. Hmm, I think I'll make an IRC chat for this game for rule creation, we could all pitch in.

Yeah yeah, I know, I'll stop posting, just put your country when you want.

Great, I'm still waiting for everyone else to join.

In this game, I decided to remove trading, but the diplomacy is still in. You can claim someone's land if you want, try to diplomatically get the land... or alliances, treaties, war, peace, etc. Basically anything you can do in real life for diplomacy for countries. Okay, to be honest, I really want to revive the other map game, so I thought I'd create my own... so this may not be different, but I'll try to make it be that way.

Sure, you can join any time.

Rebels (darker form of my color) have captured a few regions.

Rebels give you a penalty. Rebels and your enemy vs. you is a very difficult battle to win.

Thanks a lot Bla, you used the map with Fiah's screwed up borders. Fiah, look at Bla's, mine, Naru's, and Mudkipz's countries, that's how you should look.

Fixed.
