Universe Sandbox 2.0.8 Now Available
« on: July 01, 2010, 12:34:52 AM »
Just run Universe Sandbox 2 to update to 2.0.8.

Please let me know if you run into any problems.

What's New in 2.0.8?

Major
- Added position lock checkbox for bodies.
- Added Hill sphere and Roche limit checkboxes for individual bodies. Find them on the the Physical properties tab.
- Added FOV (Field of View) slider to the camera panel.
- Changes to ring properties now happen automatically.

Notable Changes
-  Clicking on checkbox text now toggles the check.
- Added additional data collection for strange bug that causes a trail crash on the 1st frame (still working to track this one down).
- Added close buttons to New Body, Find, & Chart Panels.
- Added option to measure ring size in multiples of the selected body's radius.
- Changed output for crash reports to more easily identify the frequency of different crashes.

Fixes
- Fixed Orbital elements sliders not always disabling correctly which lead to a crash if you used them.
- Fixed problem of textbox arrows & pop windows remaining on screen when the simulation deletes a body.
- Fixed crash when loading simulations with background set to none.
- Fixed problem with the time step popup "auto" button not always working.
- Fixed crash on huge time steps when move tool was in use.
- Trail color transitions now smooth; they no longer appear segmented on color changes.
- Fixed problem with free mode not properly setting new body controls.
- Adjusting the velocity cylinder now works at larger scales (it wasn't working correctly in the Solar System, for example).
- Fixed the spacing and size of the explode popup panel.

Great release Dan !

But I could not see the Roche limit for any of the simulations. For example, clicking the Roche limit for the simulation of Saturn and its moons nothing appears.

Awesome. Now that it can calculate the Roche Limit, there could be an option that would automatically turn a body into dust if it entered the Roche Limit, maybe with an option to select how many particles it would create.

Roche Limit? What's that and how do I turn it on?

Roche Limit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roche_limit

It's a formula that uses 3 variables: the radius of the primary (like Saturn), the density of the primary (Saturn) , and the density of the satellite (like Pan).

Currently to use the Roche limit feature you select Pan, switch to the Physical Properties tab, and check the box to turn the spheres on around Saturn (or whatever is detected as the 'parent' of Pan).

I'm open to ideas on how to better implement the Roche limit feature.

I want it to be a checkbox to enable it.

As in Roche Limit checkbox, not Hill Sphere.

What about you select Saturn, check the Roche limit box, and then in another text box set the density of the satellite in question as opposed to actually selecting a specific satellite?

Thoughts?

It's the selecting a planet and a moon that is complicated to make simple.

If you don't know the density, then who knows. All I would need is a rough estimation. Maybe if you select an object it shows the roche limit of ALL objects orbiting it, as well as the roche limit calculated the current way.

I really can not do the Roche limit appears.

I select the simulation "Saturn & Moons" or "Our Solar System just Planets and Dwarf Planets" and then select Jupiter or Saturn, the Roche limit works fine but nothing happens when I mark the box for the Roche limit .  ???

Problem solved !

You have to click on any object in orbit around the main body and then click the Roche Limit!

Fantastic noticed that the exoplanet WASP-12b has its orbit in the boundary limit Roche Limit of the star!

Thansks Dan, the fun are beginning ! [;)]

Um...I can't find the Roche limit box either.

Hey good typographical art. I was about to need that, but I already figured it out.

why are there two spheres sometimes ???

From the tooltip: :)

Roche Limit
- Region within which a body will disintegrate due to tidal forces of the parent planet.
- Inner ring is the rigid Roche limit; outer ring is the fluid Roche limit.
- Both bodies must have densities greater than zero for values to be calculated.
- Roche limits will appear around the parent body, not the body selected.

I like typography that's good. You know I do see some typography that is bad sometimes....but yours is good.

Despite Bla's excellent diagram of how to use the Roche Limit feature, I've changed it for the next release (2.0.9) to work like you'd think it should work: by selecting the body you want to show the Roche Limit around.

You can now set the 'satellite' density in a textbox next to the checkbox.
