The population of the world in 2116 is only 3 billion because many humans decided to upload themselves to computers starting in the 2040s. However, after several decades, the smooth access between reality and the computer realm began to break down because of the decline in power generation. As a result, the uploaded people now are intermittently alive, if at all. Some groups exist who protect the uploaded people due to their equal or, in some cases, superior intelligence to actual humans and host servers which have many people in them.

There is no single world government. The UN no longer exists and has been replaced by the CRWG (computer-run world government) which is about as powerful as our present-day United States. Due to the faltering nature of the power grid, the computer masterminds of the government, far more intelligent than any human could ever hope to be, are stored on servers. None of them have real-world avatars to control as such things were deemed far too dangerous back when sentient AI exploded onto the global scene.

May 23, 2038 - Indian heatwave shocks globe - written by ClimateBot
During a continued strong positive Indian Ocean Dipole, which draws thunderstorm activity away from India and towards the African continent, India is suffering its strongest heatwave ever. Temperatures have soared past 50C across wide sections of India, with wet bulb temperatures exceeding the critical 95F for over 200 million people over the past week.

Here's a sample of this catastrophic heat:
Kharagpur, India: 121F, 90F dew point, 95.9F wet bulb
Kolkata, India: 119F, 91F dew point, 96.4F wet bulb
Dumka, India: 122F, 88F dew point, 95.1F wet bulb

New record highs were set in over 1000 stations across the country, with the hottest temperature of this heat wave setting an all time global record high temperature of 133F at Gadegi, Pakistan. Twenty-eight stations across the Indian subcontinent have recorded temperatures above 130F, and over 95% of stations have recorded a temperature above 100F with the heatwave. Widespread temperatures of 120F+ continue today and are expected to continue throughout the next week for the Ganges plain.

Extreme loss of life has occurred even as people continue to work through the heat, with many simply dropping dead while going about their daily tasks. The total death toll for this heatwave is the highest verified for any heatwave worldwide, with so far a population greater than Phoenix at its peak succumbing to the fatal heat. Raipur, India has been hit hardest, with over 50% of their population dying of heat stroke.

In order to deal with the fatal heat and humidity, the Cuttack, Kolkata, and Kharagpur metropolitan areas have been completely shut down, with people being herded into air conditioned buildings in order to survive the heat. The economic losses so far are estimated to be the third largest climate disaster globally after Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. and the 2029 Europe floods, and are still climbing rapidly.

The monsoon continues to be delayed, with it only passing Sri Lanka as of present. The near-term forecast is not looking good for the country either, with a continued slow progression north through southern India.

some statistics on the heatwave:

Deaths: 1,647,822
Direct damage: $247 billion
Total economic cost (reduced productivity, etc): $1.85 trillion
Hottest temperature: 133F
Highest wet bulb: 97.8F (101F, 97.2F dew)
Highest dew point: 97.2F
Duration: 46 days

All temperatures above 130F (54.45C):
133, 132.4, 132, 132, 131.8, 131.8, 131.4, 131.4, 131.2, 131.2, 131.2, 131, 131, 131, 131, 131, 131, 131, 131, 131, 130.8, 130.6, 130.6, 130.2, 130.2, 130, 130, 130, 130

November 12, 2033 - China Begins Strategic Bombing of Jaipur Amidst Fleeing Masses
The Chinese have begun aiding rebels in Jaipur, India. Currently, much of the city is still controlled by the government, but the new Chinese aid looks to tip the balance towards the rebels. Much of the state of Rajasthan has turned into a war zone.

Amil Haddaf reported to the Sun Times that rockets had exploded in Jaipur with Chinese labels and information on them. Many others have reported the same.

A massive attack was launched by the Rajasthan Fighters several days before the arrival of Chinese rockets. The attacks may have been connected as this action benefits China.

Internal Chinese media denies any involvement.

now it's time to switch gears and post general things instead

Depopulation through war and violence:
Syria, especially the more eastern regions, has been massively depopulated in the last five years and this shows no signs of slowing down as an end to the Syrian Civil War is nowhere in sight. Its population as of August 2015 was 16.6 million, down from a peak before the war of approximately 22 million. Over 250 000 people have died in the war, with the numbers still rapidly climbing. Over 11 million people have moved as a result of the war, about half leaving Syria entirely and another half moving within the country.

Syria experienced a ferocious and unprecedented drought in the period from 2006 to 2010 which drove many people which previously farmed agricultural land into the cities, raising tensions and causing quality of life in cities to decline as they could not keep up with the rapidly rising populations. The oft-cited factor for the war, Assad's cruelty to his citizenry, is only one piece of the puzzle. Climate change makes these long, harsh droughts more common, and more third world nations may experience horrific, complicated wars with no winners and millions of outpouring refugees.

I think India is a prime candidate for this, with its current drought which has so far lasted for two years and a similar pouring of people into cities (although this has been going on for longer than the drought has) (and the drought is probably connected to el NiƱo rather than a persistent climate change induced drought). If it is similar to the situation that caused the Syrian drought and subsequent civil war, the west may be completely unable to cope with the massive numbers of refugees from the hardest-hit regions of India.

While it will probably not happen due to the current drought, it may happen due to another drought or even a state of permanent drought like what is coming to the western US as the Pacific jet stream meanders more and slows with Arctic amplification. When this happens, I only pray that it does not take the entire country by storm for that would be a humanitarian crisis worthy of being carved in stone and told for thousands of years. Or that India becomes sufficiently industrialized in the coming years that a significant drought does not destabilize the entire population.

In the 2116 scenario, India experiences a vicious drought from 2025-2033, and by which time still has a massive percentage of its population surviving through subsistence farming. During this eight year period, over 100 million people move into cities, causing quality of life declines in several key cities. A civil war explodes in 2032, with the semiarid provinces and the Ganges provinces hit the hardest. In the five years after 2032, over 210 million people leave the region, with 70 million fleeing the country as refugees. Paradoxically, the Middle East accepts many of them, and approximately 30 million attempt to get into Europe, triggering a refugee crisis magnitudes greater than the present one.

2100: World War III breaks out over dwindling resources. Amongst the battling, a nation is born. One that places scientific expansion above most. They call themselves some sory of Latin word that we think translated to "all-weed" or something. Starts with O. Now for some drama and cats.

September 13, 2062 - Coffee now unprofitable to grow in Brazil - written by Economnomnomics
Everyone's favorite drink - at least it used to be - coffee - has become unprofitable to grow even in the southern states of Brazil as warming outside the ice-climate zones continues unabated.

Cafe de Cultivadores has filed bankruptcy for the third year in a row as over 85% of crops in Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul have failed to flower and produce beans. We have advised this many times before, but if you want to continue drinking coffee, a great place to grow it is right in your homes. You can also do this with cacao, another crop that has been adversely affected.

Eleven of Brazil's thirteen coffee growers have disappeared in the last ten years due to the shifting climate regions in the country. New areas sufficient for coffee growing are not appearing as quickly as old areas are being consumed by climate change. Currently, Brazil has already lost $58 billion in economic productivity this year due to the mass failures of coffee crops.

Some growers have shifted to more southerly oceanic climates like Uruguay and Western Australia, but they are not growing nearly as well in these conditions.
