Error Code: 2.1.5 Steam - KKAJN. [SOLVED!]

I can't get that application (purchased from Steam on Dec. 30th 2011) to work on my Windows XP.

[Edit - Update]I removed ALL .NET versions and Redistributables completely, then reinstalled the application, did not work. I installed VC++ 2008 SP1 Redistrib. and VC++ 2010 SP1 Redistrib., did not work.
((Now I've got 20 "vcredist_x86.exe" files in my download folder!))

Update:
I installed VC++ 2005 SP1 Redistrib., did not work.
((Now I've got 21 "vcredist_x86.exe" files in my download folder))

Update:
I made EVERY possible Windows Update.
Including Windows Search, all .NET Security updates and stuff.
Everything.
Still doesn't work.
Been busy with this issue for 12 hours+.

My mscoree.dll version is: 4.0.31106.0

I have Windows XP SP3 Prof.
NVidia GTS 450 graphics card.

Uninstalled and re-installed steam (and got kinda angry when I recognized that

this uninstalled ALL my steam games also)
uninstalled and re-installed the software
completely removed the software
re-installed the vc and .net files from the folder
installed / repaired VC++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable and 2010 SP1 Redistributable
Made all updates more than once from the MS Update website.
Removed and reinstalled VC++ 2005, 2008, 2010 Redistributables SP1 and other.
Made a reinstall (repair) of .NET 4 Complete.
Tried it with a new user, and with administrative rights for Steam.exe and

UniverseSandbox.exe.
Re-Installed the latest NVidia video driver.
I've also tried the safe mode of the game.
I've also deleted those steam config-files.
And I've tested the .NET version with the tool you posted. It said, the .NET

installation was verified successful.
I've installed the latest DirectX.
I let Steam check the game files. Successful.

I've spent many hours on trying to fix this myself.


I still get always the very same error message, please HELP!!

My mate has the exact same PC with same graphics card (exactly the same

computer) and it works for him. Also with Windows XP. With some graphics bug

when zooming out wide (there are flickering white and blue triangles).

In addition I'd like to say that I never have any problems with any other game or application.

Maybe - if someone from the team would get in contact with me - I could help finding the real reason (and fix) for this issue, since my mate and I have exactly the same computer (same hard-drives, ram, motherboard, tower, cpu, graphics card, Operating System....) and it works for him in the first place but not for me.

I am willing to help you looking into it, I can give you information about which .NET Framework versions we have on our computers and which Redistributable-versions. And much more (like installed software).
You could even request a log and copy from everything.

But please contact me!

I, of course, am not part of the team, but reading through your log dump I noticed that you have steam installed to drive "f:\"  And you have your user account installed on "C:\".  Now, I may be mistaken, but Steam doesn't behave well when stretched across drives.   Is it possible to make a user account on F:  and install on there so that the %local_data% is on the same drive as Program Files?

Before I'd suggest attempting, does your friend who can run the game have steam on the same drive as his user account?

On the other PC where the application works, it's also not on the same drive as the windows-partition.
We never had any problems with that.
And it's not steam, because the (non-steam) app from this website produces the very same error.

Well, I was talking with a fellow who uses XP and he told me that sometimes things don't cooperate with Steam games and separate drives.   

Here is a guide to moving a user profile.  But if your friend has an identical setup all the way including the letter order of the drives, I don't know if it'll be of much use.  You can give it a shot though:   http://windowsxp.mvps.org/userpath.htm

The only thing I see breaking in the log you provide is awesomiumDotNet.dll   Which is located in:   C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\universe sandbox  (It will just be Program Files for you).

I am including my copy of Awesomium.dll and AwesomiumDotNet.dll   Replace those two files with either your friend's copy or the two I'm providing.  If one doesn't work try the other, and report back with logs.   Awesomium is responsible for rendering web pages (in this case the Wiki page scrapes).  Providing any other files are not wrecked; I hope this helps.  If not, include new logs.   If it does work tell us that it worked. :D

I'm sorry this isn't working for you.

I think you've already seen this:

I wish I had a solution that worked 100%.

The reason that Awesomium is causing an error is because it can't find a file that it needs to operate correctly, like one of the DLL files from the redistributables.

Something to try would be to copy the DLL files from the VS C++ redistributables (I think that Awesomium just uses the files from 2008) into the same folder where Awesomium.dll lives (offhand I'm not sure which files these are).

Edit: I think you can find the files in the folders that start with this:
C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc90.CRT

While not a practical solution, an almost guaranteed solution would be to install this on a fresh copy of Windows.
(be sure to backup all your documents and saved games files, uninstalling Steam would not have deleted these)

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it.

Alright: I've tried it with each (of five) version of the winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc90.CRT - folders I found and put the three dlls from those folders into the us folder that holds the awesomium.dll's and tried to start us twice each time.
No success. Still always the same error: KKAJN.
Then I copied ALL 8500 DLLs from C:\Windows\.. into that folder

and got another error instead:

"2.1.5 Steam - LNOMB"

And was able to run it in safe mode (other options didn't work. Open simulation crashs with LNOMB, and Start Normally crashs also with LNOMB).

Now please tell me that I can remove some of the 965MB dlls in the us-folder!

It probably only needs one of the DLLs that you copied. Try copying them all out execpt for these:
mfc90.dll
atl90.dll
mfc90u.dll

This guy got that error:

I removed the DLLs. And completely deleted the US files, then downloaded the program from steam again, reinstalled US and added those files to the folder (F:\Programme\Steam\SteamApps\common\universe sandbox) which contains awesomium.dll (mfc90.dll, atl90.dll, mfc90u.dll).
Now it crashes without any error message and does not run in safe mode.

And killing and restarting the app doesn't work.

Alright...

well I tried all of the DLLs...

it's "t2embed.dll" (Microsoft T2Embed Font Embedding, 5.1.2600.6031 (xpsp_sp3_gdr.100826-1646)).

After I copied that from one of the %windir% - subdirectories into the program-folder (F:\Programme\Steam\SteamApps\common\universe sandbox) the application worked without any error, in normal mode.

Hi there guys, I was wondering if there is something I ought to do other than put t2embed.dll in the Universe Sandbox sub directory? I have done that, tried a few different versions of the dll file that were different file sizes, but I'm still getting the same error message. As far as I can see I have all of the C++, with 7 of the 2005 file, 10 of the 2008 file, and 2 of the 2010 file, and windows update says i'm all up to date, should I need to do anything else?

It might be some other file that's common on most machines, but for some reason is a different version or is missing on yours. I wish I had a fix for you, I'm sorry that I don't.

We are working on a full rewrite of Universe Sandbox that we will release later this year and will be free for everyone that's ever purchased (even v1). It's a completely different engine that won't require .NET 4 or most of the other dependencies. I expect that this version will work for you when it's released.

Your error is that The Object reference is not set to an object instance (I ripped that from Google Translate  :o
