Procedural textures would be amazing. Totally unique celestial bodies.
And you could save textures you like! That would be great. :D

Here are very good tutorials of how to create rocky or gas planets :

A little update: here you can see Womwath (reworked from scratch), Shantycool (new moon), Balines (partial rework to make it seamless) and Ghoul (new moon).

The maps will be released under this Creative Commons licence.

Is Universe Sandbox considered commercial? If it is, Dan Dixon can't use it, which would be no fair.

But is Universe Sandbox commercial? If so, Dan couldn't use the textures, because of the license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/

Anybody will be able to use the maps for free for making their own worlds, publishing screenshots or videos in US, Celestia or whatever product.

The two main limits with the CC licence are that you cannot redistribute the maps themselves with modifications or within a commercial product, unless a waiver has been given by the author. It's just usual practice for people who spend time creating stuff (including Dan himself), I dont see what's wrong about it?  ???

I still think Universe Sandbox is commercial-like.

No worries guys. I think that Sanduleak's plan to release them under a Creative Commons licence totally makes sense.

And they're looking really great. I'm sorry I'm not further along in supporting custom textures within the UI.

This is Mack, the last but one body in hydrostatic equilibrium in my star system. The project  is closing to an end, the package should be made available by mid-week I guess. I hope you'll have  a much fun using it as I had working it out  :)

Any way you could possibly make a visual tutorial on making rocky planet textures? The "space voyagers" can make earthlike ones... but I want rocky ones, like your Mack, and other moons like Ghoul (i think that's the one)

This is what I came up with, I just painted some stuff and distorted it.

I'm sad, cause it's blurry.

You must pick proper textures to start up with. Most of mine come from freetextures.org

Then it's lot of tweaking and effects.

Ummm... I'm not sure what you do though...

Aha! I think I kinda got it... Let me see.

Okayz. It's a bit patchy, but, do you have any tips to make it less patchy?

I haven't tested it on a sphere either, and I don't think it will line up well... So, I'd like to see if you can do a little work to match up the sides for me, if you don't mind.

I wold smooth it myself... but I don't really know how.

Here it is on "Test".  :D

In the northern hemisphere, you can see, the Kutuluk Flats (big white blob) and Lesser Kutuluk (small round white blob), and a deep ridge in the southern hemisphere, Tahnui Rigg.

If you're using Photoshop, here's how to correctly modify textures so they wrap properly on a sphere:
http://www.vantagegraphics.co.uk/pages/notebook/mapsphere.html

And two other tutorials that explains the same concept:
http://www.bluesubstance.com/photoshop/polar_01.htm
http://www.maxoncomputer.com/tutorial_detail.asp?tutorialID=54

All of these use the polar mapping feature.
This is the technique I used for the blue bowling ball.

I used Paint. It is simpler. i just cut the sections from one image, and then I pasted them in paint. I was goign to use Sumopaint, but it wouldn't copy anything.

According to Google Translate, it means:
"Tee Japanise grilled windows folder!"

I think it's best to write in English in Universe Sandbox 2 Discussion. It's a more serious board. [Seriousface.png]

I was typing random Japanise characters. And my phone was autocorrecting them.

Anyways, fine :P
