Steam Crash on Launch - 2.1.3 Steam - KKAJN
« on: July 09, 2011, 06:41:03 AM »
I'm having the same issue the game crashes on start up with the error object reference not set to an instance of an object Error Code: 2.1.3 Steam -  KKAJN

i have done absolutely everything anyone has ever posted to fix this issue, including re installing .net 4, c++ re installing the game, deleting the config files, verifying the cache, restarting steam, updating my drivers restarting my computer, updating windows, making a new user... i ran the .net verifier and all of my .net versions verify...

i have no idea what the deal is but as far as i can tell I'm not the only one with the issue and no one else has fixed it or posted they have.

any help for us would be greatly appreciated!

oh and i have stereoscopic 3d off.

This is a weird crash that I don't yet have a good solution for (and I've never seen it in person).

Did you submit the crash? What email address did you use?
I'd like to look at your specific log files.

And you've tried step 3.25?
http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,3513.msg33771.html

Here's another thread where someone had the same error code:

Yes i did try 3.25, I'm pretty sure i submitted the error a couple times, not sure if i used an email i will re submit it again right now. It looks like that other person has the same error but there message is different... weird... ill take a screen shot and post it aswell if that will help.

edit: alright i went ahead and sent resubmitted the error i put a note in stating it was me from the fourms

Also i went ahead and tried the non steam version as well and i get the exact same error.
I have since completely uninstalled and re installed .net and c++ with no change.

edit edit: after reading threw the other thread completely i though it might also be useful to state that i am running windows 7 and i have the game installed on the c:/ drive however for some reason D:/ is my system drive, not sure if that could be an issue but it may help i guess.

Edit edit edit: after reading some more threads, i went ahead and deleted anything i could relating to C++ and .net, and then uninstalled universe sandbox and restarted, i just re installed and let it run and install the presets and well installing .net I'm getting an error saying LODCTR.exe has encountered and illegal instruction choose close to terminate the application, also another error saying NTVDM.exe has stopped working... hmmm...

Edit edit edit edit: Well.. after choosing ignore after all of the errors the game started up with no issues at all... I'm baffled... so it looks like the issue was .net and C++ after all... i had to manually go in and remove all of the versions in the programs list, there uninstallers didn't get rid of everything, i had about 20 different versions I'm guessing most of them came from steam installing C++ .net derect x and everything else under the sun every time you run a game for the first time.

So to be clear... everything seems to be working fine now?

Or are you still getting errors when you start up Universe Sandbox, but you're just ignoring them?

I recently purchased this software through Steam and have not been able to run the program due to the above error.  I have tried the above fix and found that it did not correct the issue.  I have reviewed the Sandbox log file and it appears that the software is attempting load a file titled, "AwesomiumDotNet.dll" at the time of the crash event.  I would very much like to use this program, but I feel that if the issue with "AwesomiumDotNet.dll" is not fixed I will be forced to request a refund of the purchase.

I have forwarded this issue with log files in a crash report as prompted by the software.  Thank you.

Did you try re-installing the C redistributables? I'm 99% certain that's the issue.

I appreciate your reply.  But, unfortunately I have re-installed the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable" and the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable" according to resolution bullet 3.25 multiple times without correcting the issue.

My method was to use the Windows 7 uninstall tool to remove the current redistributables and then your 3.25 links to download new copies.  After which, I used Windows update to update the downloads.  Then, I uninstalled "Universe Sandbox" using the Steam interface and re-installed.

The install executes without issue, but when I try to "play" the simulation for the first time it consistently crashes with the same error message (although it has been updated for the new version of Universe Sandbox).

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Error Code: 2.1.4 Steam - KKAJN

The log file appears to still indicate that the "AwesomiumDotNet.dll" is failing to load or be accessible.

I hope these details help and if you believe that a different sequence should be applied to re-install the C++ redistributables please reply to that effect.

I thank you again for your assistance.

I'm really sorry you are both having this problem.

It's a problem with certain library files that Universe Sandbox requires not being installed correctly and isn't specifically a problem with Universe Sandbox.

The guaranteed solution to this problem is re-installing Windows. Unfortunately, that's not an easy or quick thing to do.

You might try uninstalling the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 x86 redistributables (not x64) and then reinstall them.

Take a screenshot of the Add-Remove program window.

Make a note of exactlywhat you're uninstalling so that you can re-install it.
If you uninstall one that some other program requires you could cause other software to break.

Also make sure that Windows is totally up-to date.

You should also make sure you have all the latest Windows Updates installed.

Hi, I'm pretty sure this is the same error as I was getting. Please see this post:
http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,3513.msg51270.html#msg51270

I too traced it to the VC++ Redistributables, and hope that my suggested solution can help :)

I had this error just now after installing it through steam, and this is how I solved it:

1) Looked in add/remove programs, this is what I had: http://imgur.com/PN9KX.  I didn't uninstall anything, I just wanted to know what I had.

2) Downloaded the following 3 files:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5638
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5582

3) Ran them all.  Used the "repair" option on all of them.

4) Started the game again, it did not give the same error, but said something about there being an error with the simulation.  I just clicked on the button on the right.  I forget exactly what the option was, i think it may have been "new"?

5) Program now runs properly.

Just figured I'd share what worked for me in case it is useful for anyone else.

Hey guys, new to this forum, thanks for this work around, sadly it did not work for me, the first and third download give me the option of repairing, but the middle one does not, it just asks you to accept some T's and C's but doesn't give you a repair option. I've ran Universal Sandbox since and still nothing.

If it helps I am indeed running this, or trying to, off Steam, downloaded it in the sale last night, i've a Windows 7 64bit system. Also I've submitted an error report every time it has failed, with the same email address I registered for this account with.

I fear there are more people with this problem, they just haven't found their way here yet.

Thanks you guys, hope you can help!

Dom.

DAN -

I'm also having the same Problem:

Error Code: 2.1.5 -  KKAJN

I don't have the time (or indepth understanding of what is meant by C Redistributable) enough to get this working.  My son showed me this software running on his PC and I thought it was serioulsy cool so I paid my $19.99 and bought a copy for my PC.  I still would like to get it running ... but I can't afford the time to try all sorts of uninstalls and reinstalls in hopes that I can get it working.

DAN - when you get this figured out, please send me a new build, or specific instructions on how to fix.
In the mean time, check out the cool audio spectrum analyzer at www.fatpigdog.com/SpectrumAnalyzer

Best Regards, Fatpigdog

Download and run these 2 files:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5582
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328
... then restart your computer.

I suspect this will fix your problem.

Let me know if it doesn't.

Dan, I will try this.

Question though:  One of these is Visual C++ 2008, and the other is Visual C++ 2010.  Does the 2010 superceed the 2008?  Do I need both, or can I just do 2010?  Also if I need to do both, does the order matter?

Also, it looks like I have Visual C++ Redistributable 2005 installed [it shows up twice (!) under Add/Remove].  Should I uninstall this (these) first?
Thanks, FPD

You need both 2008 and 2010. Don't uninstall 2005, some other program you have installed needs this.

I used different programming libraries and some of them need 2008 and some need 2010.

No Joy.  I am now proud owner of Visual Basic Redistributables 2005, 2008, and 2010.  Same error at start up of the program.  I tried restarting PC also, still get the same error

Well, can't say I didn't try.  I uninstalled the 2 copies of VC++ 2005, and my newly acquired 2008 and 2010.  Then REinstalled them in order of 2005, 2008, 2010, Then I repaired .Net 4.  Then I uninstalled and reinstalled USB (pretty clever huh?).  I also did PC restarts mixed in liberally.  No Success.

Now what ?

The last easy thing to try is to copy the t2embed.dll file into the same folder as Universe Sandbox.exe:

You can download that file from this post:
http://universesandbox.com/forum/index.php/topic,5423.msg51840.html#msg51840

Let me know if that works.
