Roche Limit?
« on: May 17, 2011, 01:58:36 PM »
Anybody get this working?  For the life of me, I can't get a body to break apart around Jupiter or Saturn with this on in any combination of settings.

You can't.  If you want it to explode just hit the explode button and set it to million of pieces.

It only appears at a visual option. It doesn't do anything yet, so I suggest you do what m435 says.

Try putting an object in orbit around another inside of it's Roche limit, be sure bounce mode is turned on, and then explode it with a velocity of 0. It might break apart and turn into a ring.

If you break apart an object with explode within a planets roche limit and collision on bounce, the object just suddenly stops... at least for me.

Hmm... I'm developing all day tomorrow, so I'll test this then.

Having not tested this, you might have better success with a smaller planet or bigger moon (where the moon and planet are within a mass factor of 100 or less of each other).

That's a bug with bounce mode not working correctly with objects of dramatically different scales. Try it again with a moon around 1/10 the mass and diameter of the planet and you should have better success.

I tried to do that but it gets complicated and unwieldy because the moon is so big, it constantly gets thrown into the planet. If if shrink the moon, the density goes up, and i have to readjust the roche limit so that the moon gets even closer and collides into the planet again and then.... Would it be possible to fix that bug? Whats the limit where bounce mode starts not working?
