Here's a translated version of the article:
Map, blocks and lots of of data - Now all of Denmark is in MinecraftThe ministry of the environment have used their public map data to put Denmark into the computer game Minecraft.
Here the Minecraft version of Møns Klint is shown. From today, everyone with a license to the computer game Minecraft can visit a model of Denmark in full size.
That makes Denmark the first country in the world that you can explore in 1:1 size.
The model consists of about 4000 billion blocks, and has a size of about 1 terabyte, if you want to download the entire country.
Height models, buildings and much moreIt is Simon Kokkendorf and Thorbjørn Nielsen from the Danish Geodata Agency who have taken the publicly available data about the country - from height models to information about roads and buildings - and "translated" it into the characteristic blocks of the game Minecraft.
At the same time, they have introduced a coordinate system, so that you can easily find a specific place within the model, and visit your road, home or a place you maybe have never seen before.
The blocky Denmark can be used in schoolOne of the ideas behind the project was to give children the possibility of moving around in a 3D model of Denmark, that could be used in social studies, geography and other subjects.
Karin Lyngby Kristensen from Ørestad School tells:
- You could also use it in math, where the pupils for example get a task to build a new playground next to their school in Minecraft with a specific number of blocks at their disposal.
At the same time you could also build or remove blocks in the model in Minecraft, create your own buildings, hills or roads - or change the coastline if you're not satisfied with the beach.
The model can be changed, but without dynamite! That also means that the model can quickly deter from the physical world, Thorbjørn Nielsen says.
- We have removed the possibility of using dynamite in the model, but you can easily change a lot. So we appeal to the users to change Minecraft-Denmark with respect and taking other people into consideration.
You can find more info about the model on
The Geodata Agency.
I think I'll investigate this in the weekend. I wonder if it's a server or downloadable world or both. If they don't keep the original model as a copy it'd be interesting to see how griefers react to such a big model.
And I wonder if Greenland is a part of it, probably not, if it were, I could hardly imagine it not being mentioned considering how big it is.
Just read a bit more about it, I think it's both a server and downloadable, but Idk if what they made is overwritten. A demonstration video is here:
