It's because the line makes it an A, not an upside down V.

Yeah...the Greeks can confuse it with a V without the line.

Why sigh? I thought we were talking about the Latin Alphabet, but then I read again, and you said "to keep the GREEKS", and that's what made me remember.

True, but I guess we just can't яэspзст everyone. :P
Half of the Cyrillic letters look the same or nearly the same way as Latin letters, but have different meanings. And the greek beta [β] is used as a double-s in German. :P
