Upcoming planet textures
« on: May 09, 2010, 06:36:44 AM »
I plan to make a bundle of planetary textures using Photoshop. This one is a hot jupiter, as rendered in Universe Sandbox and Photoshop.

Cool. I think someone said an idea where you make your own textures in Universe Sandbox. Don't know if its possible though.

A barren terran (Gnagax) and a venus-like (Imogen) planet.

How can you make those? Those are impossible for me to make.

I know that, but I can't even make that in Photoshop.

Another venus-like planet, plus a habitable one.

How EXACTLY do you make them? I want to!

I'd love to explain but I'm afraid it would be a real pain because of the many stages. Also there is no unique recipe, you must use what tool is best suited to your needs: sometimes a combo will be awesome on a texture, and sometimes it will be just crap.  :-\

I can only advise you to find a good Photoshop tutorial and practice. It's the best way to learn  :)

This is only the first version of the textures, now the good news is that I will publish them when the multiple stars system they belong to (Rosphevron) is in its final shape.

I made one that's coolish, but XML sucks, so I don't want to even make a render.

Those look great.

What resolution are you saving the textures?

I'm assuming you're editing xml to make these work?

I want to add UI support for this soon (so you can change a texture without editing XML).

Yes I'm editing xml, having a UI to do so would be cool.

At the moment I don't have a consistent rule for the resolution: it ranges from 800x300 (JPEG, 66KB) to 4000x4000 (JPEG, 1.1MB)
I'll try to release two renderings for each planet: lo and hi res. That will depend on the quality of the raw textures used in each case.

Save them as PNGs, they look better and have smaller file sizes.

Smaller? They are like 3 times as big.

Bow to the PNGs. Surrender your hard drive to the beloved PNGs. If you do... They will not hurt you.

Then use a freaking JPG 2000, or GIF, or PSD, RAW, or TIF.

JPEG 2000 - ???
GIF - No opinion
PSD - Is that Photoshop?
RAW - i don't think that's an image
TIFF - JPEG with good quality... larger file than PNG

Yeah... I'd recommend PNGs as well because they are lossless (meaning that there's no loss of data due to compression like there is with a JPG). You can always create a JPG from a PNG later. :)
Although generally PNGs will be larger than a JPG.

At the same time... It's not like you can tell there's much loss of data with a JPG. No worries either way.

JPEG 2000 is a file type for pictures.
PSD is Photoshop.
RAW is an image.

I look at Jpeg carefully, and they are terrible to look at when they are small JPGs.

PNG is lossless, so it will look exactly as you made it. But JPG is useful for files like photos (and planetary textures), if you need them to be smaller. If there are many areas with a single color, PNG is better though, as JPG will make strange patterns in them.
JPG also get's worse every time you edit it and save it, so it's best to save an original as PNG, and copy it and make that one JPG when it has to be uploaded.

Awesome! I hope these are included as random textures in Universe Sandbox! That would be so cool!
