Title: Screenshot of Dynamic Craters | A new feature in the upcoming Alpha 7
Post by: Dan Dixon on May 08, 2014, 05:46:52 PM
We finally checked in the dynamic crater tech that only been working in isolation for a long time... this screenshot shows the results after a bombardment of collisions from a larger impactor which caused fragments to also impact the orbiting clones of Earth's moons.

There's two more screenshots of the collision tech on our most recent blog post: http://universesandbox.com/blog/2014/05/collisions-and-craters/

Since Alpha 6, we've been making major changes to the collision system and implementing a material system which will make planet creation and destruction more interesting, dynamic, realistic, and satisfying.

Thanks to the whole team who's making all of this possible.

Not sure when we'll release Alpha 7, but it will be the biggest update yet.

Are there going to be some other big additions you're keeping secret until the update?

I think I need a new pair of everything.

Why do earth's continents look cracked and junky?

Well when you slam rocks the size of Ceres into the Earth a few times it does that.

Oh. Will that be fixed?

.
There is the addition of editing component ratios in a body, which is really nice.

Yes, they are very beautiful. Can we gave some screenshots of this on a non-water planet and a magma planet please?

How close are you guys to doing plastic collisions? The Earth-Theia impact is the main example I'm thinking of, but any glancing impact would be the same sort of situation.

Um... I don't think they need to make anymore improvements for the initial release other than fixing bugs, but that's up to them.

I noticed earth doesn't have any vegetation. Do impacts kill vegetation now?

On average an Alpha stage is released every 1928274548384 nanoseconds, so Alpha 7 should be out in 002876238 nanoseconds.

Hell's blazes. If I had the ability to play any "games" and the opportunity to get on the Alpha-Tester list, I'd be experimenting and looking for bugs and things-that-could-be-added SO MUCH.

Alas, lab reports must be done...
