Don't worry SuperNova, think about for how long we've made it already; life on Earth has survived for four billion years. And we have never had such good defenses as today - we have missiles which can be used to destroy incoming comets etc., we can fight diseases and threats from nature by our advanced network of communication and technology...
And it's the communication network that's causing the trouble, because the media needs people to watch their TV program so they can earn money. And what's more catching than talking about a doomsday or a disaster?

People have predicted doomsdays thousands of times already, nearly every day in every year can somehow become a magical number or something that could be a doomsday. The best thing to do is to try to enjoy your life and use reason as a weapon against the irrational claims about things like 2012. You are a clever person, and know that the universe works because of physical laws and not supernatural magic, now think: How could the end of a human made calender cause the Earth, universe or whatever, to suddenly be destroyed?
You will quickly find out that the prediction is like all the other doomsday predictions, it's nonsense. :)
Beware when you don't listen to the scientists, because only the scientists have worked to find the truth.

I'm gonna find all the 2012 videos on December 22 2012, and I'm laugh at the people who believed in it... (No offence SuperNova) I can't wait for that day...

I saw someone who posted about an asteroid that passed in 2004 or something, they claimed they would all die... Almost everyone said, "Where's that asteroid?" or "I'm still here, its (the next day)"

A nod to Bla.

I would add: How would the Mayans have known the world would end in 2012?

The vortex in the sky was a Russian rocket test that went wrong. No worries.

If you want to read all about how the world might end, but also about how unlikely it is check out this book:

Death from the Skies! - The Science Behind the End of the World
http://www.amazon.com/Death-Skies-Science-Behind-World/dp/0143116045/ref=pd_sim_b_6
I just started reading it tonight. It opens with a chapter on asteroid and comet impacts.

All the books that predicted 2000 as the end of the world are in the trash, b/c EVERYONE now knows they are BS. The current crop of BS books are also written by questionable minds at best. I've read one or two and concluded the author(s) were delusional, and/or out to make a buck by preying on people who believe anything over and over.  How many times can you tell someone that 'naive' is not in the dictionary before they stop looking? *Some people* will fall for it over and over, all you need to do is tell them the dictionary has been revised and you have a new one.

All the current crop of BS doomsday books will be thrown out after whatever dates they say is the end of the world .. but not before the author makes buckets of money from them.

There are a lot of people out there who are looking to make a buck, and they've learned that a large portion of the public will fall for it every time. Fear sells, sensationalism sells, and sex sells. If you look at the media, TV shows, news, and movies you will find this is what makes up most of them. Even so called documentaries are becoming more filled with special effects, explosions, errors, fantasies, and crazy crap to get ratings up. I've noticed the History Channel makes mostly garbage any more. The BBC is still a pretty good source though.

You will find what you're looking for... if you are looking for negativity you can find it almost anywhere, if you are looking for beauty you can find it almost anywhere, even in the same places. That said humanity's best bets are to colonize more places in the universe, and use technology and knowledge to safeguard our future.

Thank you MrPicky for that awesome response. I agree wholeheartedly.

@SuperNova
The world is beautiful. Don't waste your time being fearful of it. Fear is a waste of your imagination.

Who cares about 2012? Why did the mayan's think that was the end of the world? Maybe because their calendar stopped at 2012 or something? >:(

They probably just thought like most people think about global warming today. "It's too far into the future, I don't care". They were just too lazy to write any more years in their calender, so they stopped. ;)

Nice response MrPicky. :)

haha lol  ;D

the thing about the calendar, or must i say calendar's. yes there are 20.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayan_calendar
read this.
the 13th calendar is going to end, not the world.

there are 7 more to come.
the thing is that its ''unown'' and people (like me) fear the ''unown''

Yeah, supposedly Baktun 13 ends and when it ends the world "becomes a new". But, no one has ever recorded that so whatever.

The calendar was counting a several year period. It ended on 2012, and that is the same time the planets align, and there is no 2012 Apocalypse, it's just the end of a calendar. Nothing to be scared of, nothing that will happen.

"We don't know" doesn't mean "it's equally likely". :)
The world doesn't end in 2012. None should even consider it before there is any evidence supporting it.
