The edge of civilization
« on: April 25, 2013, 04:03:27 PM »
For most people in the world, getting lost in a single direction wouldn't mean going very far until you reach civilization.

Today while driving home, my little sister asked "why is there houses on one side of the road and not the other", this road being the city limits of Thunder Bay. This brought up the question of, what is on the other side of the road in the northern direction?

Excluding possible native reserves (too lazy to search them all) and a single rail road track, you would spend 8300km walking nearly directly north until you hit... Bratsk, Irkutsk. (Bratsk is just the closest city north, there is a village in the Irkutsk region that is directly north)

Until the Trans Siberian Railway, you wouldn't come across a single house...

I guess I live on the northern edge of civilization.

if you walked north you would be at the north pole where you would die before ever thinking that south was a direction you could walk to find civilization

(but anyway yeah interesting)

After complaining about my slow internet to my parents, they put some research into it.

Turns out this is the fastest internet possible here.

It's not like I live in the rural areas, I live right near downtown Port Arthur. No lack of population here. Just so isolated from everywhere else in the world...

You guys are no longer allowed to complain about how shitty your internet is, because everyone here has better options than I do.

I guess my neighbourhood must just be too ancient for internet.

My 4G connection is faster somehow.  >:(

But still, none of these speeds are close to comparable with a regular 100k population city in the middle of somewhere.

You are not allowed to complain about upload speeds. I spent 12 hours uploading the Blacraft map in March, it would only take you about an hour.

Ok I have examined Russian cities after hearing yqt saying that Thunder Bay is not cold.

Sankt Peterburg: 5.8C
Moskva: 5.8C
Novosibirsk: 1.7C
Yekaterinburg: 3.0C
Nizhniy Novgorod: 4.8C
Samara: 5.6C
Omsk: 2.1C
Kazan: 4.6C
Chelyabinsk: 3.2C
Rostov-on-Don: 9.9C
Ufa: 3.8C
Volgograd: 8.2C
Perm: 2.7C

Compared to Thunder Bay:
2.5C
