Before & After the Impacts - New Screenshots - Oct 2012
« on: October 24, 2012, 12:43:17 AM »
This is an early look at the new random planet system with procedural craters.

This may or may not be in the initial release of Universe Sandbox 3.0 as it's still very experimental. However when released this feature will require a graphics card that can run shader model 3.0 (so most computers from the last 5 years). You'll still be able to run Universe Sandbox on older DirectX 9 video cards, but with reduced functionality and visual flare.

How to Determine DirectX version and Shader Model You're Running

Although an impact that big would probably boil off the ocean. Like I said... it's a simulator in progress.

Cheers to Georg for developing this feature.

(that just Cool. Thanks Giant Army your just awesome.  :o
 and thank you Georg

Can you possible make a video out of this to see this impact?  :3 )

My mind is blown at the ammount of work and attention to detail put into this newest update! Keep up the great work!

What "Reduced" Functionality do you mean?

I have an ATI HD 7750 so Im already in the clear but I have a friend who plans to buy the game after the update, and he doenst have the newest of computers or Graphics card with  shader model 3.0.

Awesome! Was that planet generated? It looks really nice!
I have several questions to ask, and they might have been already asked. But I'm not sure if they were answered.
1. Will planets simulate effects of temperature and other factors?(e.g. Earth's oceans freezing due to increased distance from the sun; Earth's ocean boiling away due to heat or a huge cosmic collision.)
2. About that fluid particle simulation you're implementing, will you use it for simulations of collisions, seeing the materials of the bodies go everywhere? (You may have talked about it before, and I'm sorry if you did. I didn't catch what you said if so.)
3. About the landing feature, will you be able to actually move about on a planet? And will the atmospheres simulate a sky? (It may be obvious, but I want to make sure.)
Thank you for taking the time to read this. :D

looks nice; is the impact just visually there or has the 3d model changed shape?

Looks like it.

It definetly looks awesome and that big one looks like it could blast some of the atmosphere off as well as boil the ocean, almost a planet killer size object actually.

Anyways, like kevin said, could we see a video of it? I know it's a work in progress and the beta is a month or two away.

All three of those screenshots were created by modifying the values of our automatic planet creation system.

It's our expectation that you'll be able to create craters like that by smashing a planet with asteroids, but we don't have that working yet with this system.

Turns out making a robust, awesome looking, reasonably accurate universe simulator is hard work. :)

1. Will planets simulate effects of temperature and other factors?(e.g. Earth's oceans freezing due to increased distance from the sun; Earth's oceans boiling away due to heat or a huge cosmic collision.)

Probably not in the initial release, but this is something I'd like to eventually do.

2. About that fluid particle hydraulics you're implementing, will you use it for planets, such as simulating the effects of huge collisions?(You may have talked about it before, but I'm not sure.)

We're working on two methods of handling collisions. SPH and a much less computationally expensive method (similar to how collisions are currently handled, but much more impressive and realistic). Our implementation of SPH is still very experimental so we'll see... The idea is that you will be able to use SPH for planets, probably, eventually.

SPH is this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoothed-particle_hydrodynamics

3. About the landing feature, will you be able to actually move about on a planet? And will the atmospheres simulate a sky? (It may be obvious, but I could be wrong.)

Move around on a planet... eventually (planned, but not implemented).
Not sure about how well we're going to handle skies yet... something like that eventually. :)

Mr. Dan Dixon, do you have a date of when the Universe Sandbox 3 Beta will come out?

I'm going to stop promising dates because I'm always wrong.

What "Reduced" Functionality do you mean?

You won't be able to generate these textures on the fly. We'll provide some kind of fallback system, but it won't look as good or work as well.

Anyways, like Kevin said, could we see a video of it?

The video would be of me changing values, not actually impacting the planet. We'll get there...

The disadvantage of starting from scratch is that we're having to implement everything that was already working. The advantage is that the internal workings of the simulator (the code) is so much more robust and future-proof. So while we are wanting to add new features we also have to add all (or most) of the features that already exist.

no dan dixon just use a 10^52kg object, all physics, simulated per planck time, and a tau neutrino creating infinite processing power and memory. then all the hard stuff is done for you.

So in reality this is showing off the new random texture generation feature?

No problem. Don't worry, this program will still be awesome either way, and I can't wait to get my hands on procedural planet generation. :)

It's probably just because it's procedural generation, and anything 3D random is guaranteed to have less detail than something designed or imaged.

One is a picture of the Earth, the other is a 'random' planet. Using those names, ask your question again. I'm not sure what you mean when you call them both Earth.

well the planet tht was impacted looks like earth. the continent looks like australia. anyways, you said that you will make high quality planets. the random planet doesnt look like HD.

They are still implementing this new feature, so maybe generated planets will have the same visual effects as non-generated planets. Just give them time. :D
By the way, that planet doesn't look like Earth at all.

Not to mention that the main continent doesn't look like Australia at all.
