Really, wouldn't it be cool? I would love to see atmospheres on the planets. Even on the stars surface (You can do that with glow...). And make an atmosphere option.

No significance, as in, it doesn't have anythign really to do with simulation. i'm not trying to put down, but I don't see where we need it.

I don't think atmospheres are so important, like hbmp88 says, they won't be visible 99% of the time. And when gasses, plasmas, liquids and solids aren't simulated but only objects alone I don't think it will be important for the simulation.
I think it will be fine in the future with more computer power however. But right now I don't think it's so important.

I think it would be cool.

More of an effect and not a real use for it.

Can be an option to turn it off or on.

When it's on it just gives an appearance of a planet having an atmosphere.

Just because doesn't have a use doesn't mean it isn't cool.

You know..just for looks.

Yes, it's fine. I think I'd use it aswell.

There's an easy method about making one or more transparent spheres around the bodies. So I think it won't be too hard to implement, but still, I'm not a programmer, so I don't know.

I think there's a little problem with simulating atmospheres:

But still US could simulate fake atmospheres by using some semi-transparent sprites which would be scaled in a certain ratio with a planets / moons radius. Though it would be a cosmetic feature and not a realistic feature...

Btw, the atmospheres could perhaps also be made of particles or some "sphere points". When a body gets close to another body, these spheres are stretched out between them (like the gravity streals the atmosphere), and then the "sphere points" could be stolen by the other nearby bodies, giving them the old body's atmosphere (or parts of it).

Yes color change. But it wouldn't be only an effect of the surface. If you look at pictures of Saturn you will notice that the sun light is fading trough the the light layers of the planet's atmosphere. Same is happening on other celestial bodies. However the density and the atmospheric composition change the way the atmosphere will let light trough.

This also means that you won't get a red-orange coloured sun rise on planets like Mars.
Which you can actually see very nicely in the two photos.

It could set a color for Earth, color for Mars and so on, and you could be able to choose a color yourself.
When they steal each other's atmospheres, the colored layers will be beneath/upside each other, giving a mixed atmosphere color.

A menu like adding rings to a body would be a good idea.

Atmospheres are not that simple as you think. How would an atmosphere function be applyable on planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune? We call these planets gas planets because their atmospheres are thick on an overwhelming scale when you compare them to the solid parts of the planets.

Regarding atmosphere Jupiter is also hitting the edge of what's possible for a planet. Gas planets which are heavier than Jupiter even start to contract in their size.

I'm not asking for changing atmospheres and stuff just a static color.

Like Earth will have a blue haze around it. Giving the appearance of an atmosphere but not actually simulating it realistically.

Just for looks.

Hmm, right now you can make planets and stars with all kind of densities anyways.
It could just be toggled off, but I think it'd be an exciting tool to have.

But it could also be a fine way to simulate gas and plasma I think. Though it'd require some computer power to make these gas layers in gas giants, hmm.
