I was on the steam forums earlier when I ran across this in a thread from Mr. Dixon:
The plan is to update everyone for free. Any thoughts on how to allow people to pay something toward the new version if they want to while still updating everyone?
Well, I may think this is a little obvious. Put a paypal donate link up.
You could even get donations prior to release. :3
