Another Startup Problem
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:08:51 AM »
I downloaded Universe Sandbox from Steam a few days ago, and have not been able to get it started whatsoever.  When I attempt to start it, I get a .NET Framework error box that pops up.  I've searched through the forum for a solution to my problem, but I cannot find an answer.  This is the text of the error message:

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click
Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.
If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

Could not load file or assembly 'MTV3D65.dll' or one of its
dependencies.  The specified module could not be found.

Details:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

If I click Continue, the 'Sandbox Update Form' window pops up, with a loading symbol in it, but does nothing else.  Obviously, clicking Quit exits it, but not after Windows asks me if I would like to check for a solution online.  I've tried a few suggestions that are given in previous support threads, such as running vcredist_x86_2010.exe, but I still get the same error message.

I am trying to be as detailed as possible, and I would really appreciate some help with this problem.

Looks like you may have a corrupted download.

Check out "Verify the Installation" (step 3) here:

I thought the same thing, too.  I've verified the files several times; Steam says that they're all there.  I've even deleted the local content on my computer and reinstalled USB, but I still get the same error.  Also, I have reinstalled .NET Framework v4, but to no avail.

One thing that does work for me, though, is the demo version of the game.  I downloaded that, and it started right up.  No idea why that would work, and not the Steam version.

I had that same problem too. I verified and then I uninstalled the game and re-downloaded it from Steam. It still didn't work. It still gave me that error. Every time I had to use the Task Manager to force-quit the running process (universesandbox.exe).  After a couple of more times of restarting the game through Steam it finally worked. I'm not sure what solved it, though.

That's really strange. Any luck getting it to work?

Are you still getting this error?
"Could not load file or assembly 'MTV3D65.dll' or one of its
dependencies.  The specified module could not be found."

This happened when I tried to run the demo version of the game.  It worked for me before, but now it won't at all. ???

I am running Vista SP2, duel core CPU @ 1.4 GHz, with 2.00 GB of RAM.  Maybe this information will help clear up the problem a little...

Are you running the 64 bit version of vista?  I know that the 64 bit versions of vista and 7 have issues sometimes calling the 32 bit file MTV3D65.dll.

Have you tried to paste that file manually to the games' main folder?

I thought that that file was already in the main folder (...\Steam\steamapps\common\universe sandbox\).  I had moved that file out of that folder, to see if that had made any difference -which it didn't.  I then verified the game cache and the file was reacquired.  :-\

So you get that error if the file is in the folder or not?

What virus software are you running?

I wonder if somehow 'MTV3D65.dll' is being blocked.

With the file in there, I get the first error that I posted about.  When it is removed, I get the second error.

I am running McAfee as my anti-virus software.  I looked through it's blacklist, but there was nothing about MTV3D65.dll in there.

One thing that might be unusual about my installation of USB is that it is saved on a separate hard drive.  But I really wouldn't think that it would have anything to do with this problem.

That won't make any difference. Universe Sandbox has been developed on a different drive than C since the beginning.

This error is so strange. I'm kinda feeling out of ideas. Have you verified that you have all the latest windows updates (step 4)?

I thought so.

Yeah.  I've been updating Windows pretty regularly lately.  I just checked for updates, and there are two optional updates.  The only relevant one is one for my video driver, but I just updated that within the last week.

The only thing that I haven't done yet is totally uninstalling and reinstalling .NET.  I've repaired it a few times now, but that hasn't done anything to fix anything.

Ok. I fixed the problem for myself. I started a new account through the control panel. I logged into steam on the new windows account and it downloaded the .net framework for me through steam (where as the original account it would just come up with the error listed at the top of this post.) I logged back into my original account and now the game works!

Hmm

I will try the new account method.

After doing this, and USB is working for you, can you now run it in your original account, or must you log in as the new user every time you want to run the application?

I created a new account (on windows). After that I logged onto it and opened steam and tried opening USB and it installed the .net framework for me through steam. I logged back into my original account and it works on my original account for windows. (I deleted the new one i had just made and works good)

I found another quick fix that might help. The fix is to make sure that your DirectX is up to date. It seems that the MTV3D65.dll makes a call to a DirectX API and it might be  missing or corrupted.

Cool game by the way. I think its great for kids just to get them into astronomy. I wish this was around when I was younger.
